Enhanced Expression of the CD71 Mesangial IgA1 Receptor in Berger Disease and Henoch-Schönlein Nephritis

Abstract: ABSTRACT. IgA nephropathy (IgA-N) that comprises Berger disease and Henoch-Schönlein Purpura (HSP) nephritis is defined by mesangial IgA deposits. Recently, this group has characterized a new receptor for IgA, the transferrin receptor (CD71), expressed on mesangial cells. To assess whether CD71 was involved in the pathogenesis of IgA-N, its expression was analyzed together with IgA deposits on 16 kidney biopsies from 16 patients with Berger disease (n = 4) or HSP (n = 12). These biopsies were compared with 17 … Show more

“…The best known IgA FcRs include the polymeric IgG receptor (pIgR), FcαRI (CD89), and Fcα/µR [11]. Recently, also the role of CD71 in the pathomechanism of IgA-mediated diseases was noticed [14]. Still, a fascinating issue to be resolved is the identification of IgA FcRs involved in DH pathophysiology.…”

“…In addition, no inflammation or disorders associated with autoantibodies were detected by histopathological analyses of the kidneys (Fig. 4), where high level TR is expressed [1]. These results indicate that the antibodies which were induced by PRV/Fc immunization and reacted with A31 cells did not have cytotoxicity.…”

“…Mannose receptor expression in the kidney is restricted to the mesangium [19,20] and has been demonstrated to facilitate uptake of nanoparticles by macrophages in vivo [25,26]. The transferrin receptor, although up-regulated within the mesangium of patients with IgA nephropathy [27][28][29], is not highly expressed in the healthy glomerulus, but has been demonstrated to facilitate intracellular uptake of the transferrin-targeted siRNA/CDP-NPs in other cell lines [17,21].…”
