Enhanced Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Rice Straw Pretreated by Oxidants Assisted with Photocatalysis Technology

Abstract: This work evaluated the effectiveness of rice straw pretreatment using a TiO2/UV system in the presence of oxidants. The effects of TiO2 concentrations, pH and photocatalysis time were investigated. Inorganic oxidants including H2O2, K2S2O8, and KIO4 were added to further enhance the effect on enzymatic hydrolysis of rice straw. The TiO2/UV/ H2O2 pretreatment showed a higher amount of released reducing sugar (8.88 ± 0.10 mg/mL, compared to 5.47 ± 0.03 mg/mL in untreated sample). Composition analyses of rice st… Show more

“…Indulin AT, a popular pine kraft lignin with a low degree of sulfonation, was selected as the lignin substrate of reference. Complementarily, in view of the previous literature on the depolymerization of lignin for the production of valuable chemicals via nanoparticle-catalyzed photoreaction, , the assistance of the [C 2 mim][OAc]-based treatment with UV irradiation in combination with nanoparticles (TiO 2 or AgCl), and optionally in the presence of a well-known oxidizing agent such as H 2 O 2 , has also been explored.…”

“…More holes and increasing hydroxyl radical concentration were provided for oxidative degradation of organic contaminants by introducing oxidizing agents such as H 2 O 2 , S 2 O 8 − and IO 4 − . Therefore, a higher pretreatment efficiency can be obtained ( Chang et al., 2018 ).…”

“…The subject of research on the physical-mechanical properties of rice grains has already been addressed by researchers, because the specificity of rice grain processing and the energy demand of processing lines, e.g., grinding, drying, pelleting, etc., depends largely on these properties [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. In their research, Zeng, et al [18] focused on modeling cracking of rice grains depending on the grain indicators for the grinding process and modeling grinding and crushing processes using the discrete element method DEM.…”
