Floral volatile terpenoids (FVTs) belong to a group of volatile organic compounds (VOC) that play important roles in attracting pollinators, defending against pathogens and parasites and serving as signals associated with biotic and abiotic stress responses. Although research on FVTs has been increasing, a systematic generalization is lacking. Among flowering plants used mainly for ornamental purposes, a systematic study on the production of FVTs in flowers with characteristic aromas is still limited. This paper reviews the biological functions and biosynthesis of FVTs, which may contribute a foundational aspect for future research. We highlight regulatory mechanisms that control the production of FVTs in ornamental flowers and the intersection of biosynthetic pathways that produce flower fragrance and color. Additionally, we summarize the opportunities and challenges facing FVT research in the whole genome and -omics eras and the possible research directions that will provide a foundation for further innovation and utilization of flowering ornamental plants and their germplasm resources.

Benzenoid and terpenoid volatiles are the major compounds contributing to the unique floral scent of Jasminum auriculatum. Biosynthesis and emission of specialized scent metabolites showed maturation stage specific pattern; maximum scent emission was observed when flowers start unfurling and become fully opened under in situ condition. The activities of volatile biosynthesizing enzymes and expressions of several scent-related genes correlated well with the fragrance emission patterns. We also assessed the impact of varying air temperatures (20°C, 25°C, 30°C and 35°C) on the metabolism as well as vaporization of scent volatiles. The contents of both emitted and endogenous volatiles were higher at either 25°C or 30°C and showed relatively lower amounts at both border-range temperatures (20°C and 35°C). Further, the activities of key pathway enzymes and expressions of several scent-related genes under varying temperatures exhibited similar trends with the scent emission patterns. Analysis of non-volatile metabolite contents from flowers grown under different air temperatures suggests a perturbation occurring in the primary metabolism and immediate precursors of scent compounds. The knowledge base created through these studies shall be helpful in improving the yield of floral scent production from such horticulturally important plants in controlled cultivation systems.

Styrax is a gorgeous species combined with high medicinal and ornamental values, however, information about its floral scents is limited. This study aimed to reveal the floral scent compounds and the dynamic changes in the flowering process of Styrax japonicus, S. grandiflora and S. calvescens. Static headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was adopted in the present study. The results showed that 24, 22 and 22 volatile compounds were present at three flowering stages, among which linalool, ocimene, α-pinene and germacrene D dominated in different species. Terpenes were the main floral scent compounds in all species, whereas there was considerable relative content of ketones in S. japonicus. Among the major terpenes, α-pinene, ocimene and myrcene were the common volatiles in these species, while β-elemene and allo-ocimene were the specific volatiles in S. japonicus and S. calvescens, respectively. The highest content of terpenes occurred at initial flowering stage in three species. The differences in the type and content of principal compounds contributed to the fragrance diversity among these species. A solid foundation for understanding the complexity of volatile emission could be obtained from our findings, meanwhile, effective utilization of abundant terpenes in flowers of Styrax species should be applied.
