Enhanced electrochemical performance of FeS2 synthesized by hydrothermal method for lithium ion batteries

Abstract: Iron disulfide (FeS 2 ) powders were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) had a great influence on the morphology, particle size, and electrochemical performance of the FeS 2 powders. The as-synthesized FeS 2 particles with CTAB had diameters of 2-4 lm and showed a sphere-like structure with sawtooth, while the counterpart prepared without CTAB exhibited irregular morphology with diameters in the range of 0.1-0.4 lm. As anode materials for Li-ion batteries, the… Show more

“…From Table 1, it can also be observed that two sulphurcontaining chemicals have always been preferred as the S sources to synthesize iron pyrite. One is elemental sulphur and the other is Na 2 S 2 O 3 or Na 2 S. Wu et al, 28 Feng et al, 29 Zhang et al 30 and Xia et al 38 used Na 2 S 2 O 3 and elemental sulphur as the S precursors to synthesize iron pyrite at hydrothermal conditions. The iron pyrite samples they obtained contained irregular particles or aggregation of polyhedrons.…”

“…Although various types of surfactants have been supplied in synthesis of pyrite, 27,30,31,33,34,37,38,42,43,45 only a few obtained the {100} and/or {111} facets. 33,34 No facets have been synthesized by employing CTAB and all the pyrite crystals synthesized with CTAB tend to form aggregations.…”

“…[1][2][3] Since the energy density of commercial Li-ion batteries is controlled by intercalation compound cathodes, the high energy cathode materials with low cost are urgently needed for electric vehicle batteries. [4][5][6] The fluoride 7-12 and sulfide [13][14][15][16][17] conversion cathodes can deliver over three times higher capacity than conventional intercalation cathodes, which are very promising candidates to replace the current intercalation cathodes. 13,14,18 The conversion cathode M a X b (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu etc., X = S, F) are capable of accommodating more than one Li + per transition metal core in their reaction with Li:…”

“…To overcome the problem, some effective methods were used to improve its conductivity, such as chemical synthesis, doping and conductive polymer coating. The FeS2 powder with small diameter and homogeneous distribution can be obtained using chemical synthesis methods, such as hydrothermal [9], sol-gel [10], and electrochemical precipitation [11]. Zhang et al [12] obtained coated FeS2 powder with polyaniline, and the electronic conductivity of the resultant powders was improved.…”
