Abstract-Building automation systems are traditionally concerned with the control of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, as well as lighting and shading, systems. They have their origin in a time where security has been considered as a side issue at best. Nowadays, with the rising desire to integrate securitycritical services that were formerly provided by isolated subsystems, security must no longer be neglected. Thus, the development of a comprehensive security concept is of utmost importance. This paper starts with a security threat analysis and identifies the challenges of providing security in the building automation domain. Afterward, the security mechanisms of available standards are thoroughly analyzed. Finally, two approaches that provide both secure communication and secure execution of possibly untrusted control applications are presented.

PurposeDespite the continuous development of Building Information Modeling (BIM) standards, not all of its dimensions are supported to the same extent. This is the case of Building Automation Systems (BAS) in which the features that are limited mostly to physical setup of devices are supported. These are largely insufficient to support modeling automation scenarios. The purpose of this article is to clarify the gap in the state of the art and define the need for further developments.Design/methodology/approachThis article explores the existing gap in the literature and discusses the hypothesis of extending BIM to a wider support of BA concepts. Based on an assessment of scientific and technical literature, this study elicits the information requirements of BA and performs a gap analysis with current BIM standards, such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC).FindingsOur findings lead us to conclude that there is a lack of completeness regarding features from BAS automation and management levels. Furthermore, it is shown that IFC is the most adequate data model to cover BAS without losing its purpose, but there is still a considerable work that needs to be addressed in future research.Originality/valueBIM standards such as IFC position themselves as natural candidates for modeling and exchanging information regarding BA. However, the extent to which BIM supports automation features has never been rigorously analyzed. It is widely acknowledged that Automated Demand Response (ADR) is a key factor for the success of the Smart Grid. However, for ADR to be realized to its full extent a new generation of Building Automation Systems (BASs) will have to be developed and the existing upgraded to leverage dynamic tariff plans and curtailment calls sent from the grid. It is well known that developing BASs is an involved matter, mostly because application software is costly to develop and maintain. In practice, this state of affairs is slowing the rise of innovative solutions for ADR.In recent years, software engineering practices such as ModelDriven Engineering have been proposed as a means to alleviate the problem of developing BASs, which we believe should be presented to the Smart Grid community. This article presents the main challenges of creating software for BASs (from a modelling perspective), overviews the state-of-the-art and presents an outlook on possible model-driven engineering techniques that can be effectively applied to significantly improve the development of BASs in the near future.
