Enhanced control application development in Building Automation

Abstract: Abstract-Building Automation Systems (BAS) lack a common application model. Thus, the development of control applications (CAs) is not a very straightforward task and requires profound expertise. When in addition security has to be considered, inexperienced developers are overwhelmed by the manifold demands and constraints. This paper presents an approach to ease the CA development and at the same time to provide security for their execution. The main idea is to base the application model on a generic ontology… Show more

“…EIB/KNX is a standard for controlling automation systems in homes and buildings, following a distributed system approach (Kastner et al , 2005a, 2005b). EIB/KNX models are based on the concept of functional block , which represents a set of datapoints, abstracting behavioral aspects of a control device (Kastner et al , 2005a, 2005b; Praus et al , 2009). An example of this is an on/off switch for illumination represented by a ”Light Switching Actuator Basic” functional block.…”

“…Streamlining the development of Building Automation Systems is a complex and pervasive issue [16] that has been targeted by computer scientists as well as industry consortia through standards, development tools and languages. However, as we will try to make clear, these initiatives have targeted specific problems, resulted in a number of mostly isolated solutions.…”
