Enhanced CO Oxidation Rates at the Interface of Mesoporous Oxides and Pt Nanoparticles

Abstract: The interaction of the metal and support in oxide-supported transition-metal catalysts has been proven to have extremely favorable effects on catalytic performance. Herein, mesoporous Co3O4, NiO, MnO2, Fe2O3, and CeO2 were synthesized and utilized in CO oxidation reactions to compare the catalytic activities before and after loading of 2.5 nm Pt nanoparticles. Turnover frequencies (TOFs) of pure mesoporous oxides were 0.0002–0.015 s(–1), while mesoporous silica was catalytically inactive in CO oxidation. When … Show more

“…The Schüth group developed the preparation of mesoporous oxides using KIT-6, mesoporous silica with cubic Ia3d symmetry [8]. When KIT-6 with a bi-continuous pore structure was used as a hard template, metal nitrates as metal oxide precursors were impregnated completely into the silica templates and were converted to the desired crystalline oxides after calcinations [40]. Because the mesoporous silica was easily removed in NaOH solution, highly crystalline oxide replicas with ordered mesostructures including Cr 2 O 3 , Figure 5 illustrates an entire preparation scheme for Pt nanoparticle catalysts supported on mesoporous Co 3 O 4 , from the KIT-6 hard-template.…”

“…The multicomponent interface may owe their origin of activities to the “coordinate unsaturated” 93. In other cases, there are many beneficial SMSI effects on metal oxides support metals,23, 111 and sometimes the enhanced performance cannot simply derive from “coordinate unsaturated”. When using reductive metal oxides as supports, the reducing nature of supports would whether donate or withdraw charges from metals near the metal/oxide interface, depending on the work functions of two materials 22.…”

“…Heterostructures of Pt-based nanomaterials, including metal-Pt [1][2][3], alloy-Pt [4], metal oxide-Pt [5], metal sulfide-Pt [6], and metal selenium-Pt [7], with coherent interfaces usually have distinctly different physical and chemical properties from their single-phase components. Pt-based heterostructures have attracted considerable attention because of their multifunctional capabilities and tunable properties in practical applications, especially as electrocatalysts [3][4][5][6].…”

“…Pt-based heterostructures have attracted considerable attention because of their multifunctional capabilities and tunable properties in practical applications, especially as electrocatalysts [3][4][5][6]. Unfortunately, metal-containing species in Pt-based heterostructures are not stable under harsh chemical environments, such as strongly acid or alkali solutions, for long time testing.…”
