Enhanced charge photogeneration promoted by crystallinity in small-molecule donor-acceptor bulk heterojunctions

Abstract: We examined sub-nanosecond timescale charge carrier dynamics in crystalline films of a functionalized anthradithiophene (ADT) donor (D) with three different acceptor (A) molecules. A four-fold enhancement in ultrafast charge carrier separation efficiency was observed in D/A blends with a fullerene acceptor added at 7-10 wt. % concentrations, whereas a gradual decrease in peak photocurrent amplitude with acceptor concentration was observed with functionalized pentacene and indenofluorene acceptors. The results … Show more

“…1(b)). 10 In these films, ADT-TES-F crystallites had a predominant (00l) orientation (l =1, 3,4), in agreement with previous studies. 6 The ADT-TES-F/PCBM (9:1) blends exhibited crystalline domains of PCBM (inset of Fig.…”

“…In contrast, the addition of Pn-TIPS-F8 to ADT-TES-F reduced the crystalline order of ADT-TES-F, as discussed in our previous publication. 10 Films with P3HT did not show any significant crystalline order, which is expected from P3HT-based films which have not undergone a high-temperature annealing process. 11…”

“…Similar improvement in solar cell performance of other small molecule donor materials as a consequence of thermally favored solid state packing has been reported. 48,49 After an annealing procedure of 2 min at 130 °C on a hot plate, the MHJ showed still a very high J SC , plus a FF which equals the reference BHJ cell, thus leading to an overall improvement of performance to 6.2 %.…”

“…Spectralon 50 and 100 % reflectance standards from LabSphere, Inc. were used as references with known diffuse reflectance properties. Fluorescence in the vanes was excited with a UV part of solar AM 1.5G radiation (280-400 nm) (solar simulator with AM1.5G filter, dichroic mirror Oriel 81045 and a UV band-pass filter Oriel 81046) and measured in the same geometry as reflectance (Platt et al 2009(Platt et al , 2011Paudel et al 2014). Similar measurements of fluorescence were performed using UV lamp (360-400 nm) and outdoor sunlight with a UV band-pass filter (Oriel 81046) as excitation sources and yielded identical emission spectra.…”
