Enhanced Bioactivity and Bacteriostasis of Surface Fluorinated Polyetheretherketone

Abstract: Although polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been considered as a potential orthopedic and dental application material due to its similar elastic modulus as bones, inferior osseointegration and bacteriostasis of PEEK hampers its clinical application. In this work, fluorinated PEEK was constructed via plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) followed by hydrofluoric acid treatment to ameliorate the osseointegration and antibacterial properties of PEEK. The surface microstructure, composition, and hydrophilicity of … Show more

“…Fluorinated PEEK was made by plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) and enhanced rBMSCs adherence, cell spreading, multiplication, and ALP activity was found in comparison to pristine PEEK. It has superior bacteriostatic result against periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis . Functionalization of PEEK was done by sulphonation treatment to incorporate unique lactam‐based antibiofilms compounds so as to and found a better substitute for the creation of biomaterials resistance to bacterial contamination.…”

“…Thus, it could be concluded that PHIPEs-SS-Ag had good regeneration ability for the selective capture of Li + . The antimicrobial activity of PHIPEs-SS and PHIPEs-SS-Ag, detecting against the model E. coli bacterial strains by forming a zone of inhibition, 44 suggested that PHIPEs-SS-Ag possessed antibacterial performance, which was benecial for the antifouling process ( Fig. 11).…”

“…Such a closed elastic modulus between the PEEK and human bones can mitigate the risks of osteanabrosis and bone resorption caused by stress shielding. [5,6] From the processing perspective, PEEK can be easily fabricated through conventional plastic processing, repeatedly sterilized and heated contouring to fit the shape of bones owing to the thermoplasticity. [7] In addition to these excellent characteristics, PEEK possesses good chemical resistance, nontoxicity, natural radiolucency, and magnetic resonance imaging compatibility.…”
