Engineering Graphene Wrinkles for Large Enhancement of Interlaminar Friction Enabled Damping Capability

Abstract: Graphene nanoplates are hoped-for solid lubricants to reduce friction and energy dissipation in micro-and nano-scale devices benefiting from their interface slips to reach an expected superlubricity. On the contrary, we propose here by introducing engineered wrinkles of graphene nanoplates to exploit and optimize the interfacial energy dissipation mechanisms between the nanoplates in graphene-based composites for enhanced vibration damping performance.Polyurethane (PU) beams with designed sandwich structures h… Show more

“…The last potential application of PLs is used as the filler phase in polymer-based composite to enhance the damping properties. [264][265][266][267][268][269] As we all know, damping performance is an important aspect for materials under mechanical vibration, high-speed shock, and cyclic loading. It can evaluate energy absorption and dissipation.…”

“…The O2 plasma treatment applied here has a double function. On the one hand, the treatment hydrophilizes the to-be coated foams with oxygen-contained groups so that, the inks or the water-based PUD can be easily absorbed into the foams due to improved wettablility; on the other hand, the treatment can also strengthen the adhesion of the coating interface by forming chemical bonds with the assistance of silane coupling agents (KH-550) [11,24]. The vacuum and application of constant pressure are exerted here to provide close contact between the base material and the coating solutions (including GO ink and water-based PUD).…”

“…The vacuum and application of constant pressure are exerted here to provide close contact between the base material and the coating solutions (including GO ink and water-based PUD). The GO inks were prepared based on our previous work [24] and the as-prepared GO nanoplatelets (Figure 1b, c) are ~10 µm in lateral size and ~6 nm in thickness. XRD and XPS characterizations (Fig.…”
