Engineering design memory for design rationale and change management toward innovation

Abstract: International audienceAs the metaphor of a film, engineering design is a process where stakeholders take decisions from product requirements to the final designed system. Unfortunately, industries lack of long term project memories to go back and forth in order to remember actions and decisions. That generates time consuming retrieval tasks that have definitively no added value since they aim at seeking past information. This paper proposes an extension of a design process meta-model that aims at tracing the p… Show more

“…This approach illustrates the feasibility of the assumption about using process mining techniques to support decision making in complex processes that are controlled by inclusive, exclusive and parallel gateways. Future work consists in fully automating the approach and integrating it in the process visualizer tool presented in [22]. It also consists in evaluating this approach, using real-world design and supervision processes, with respect to some performance indicators such as execution time, quality of the proposed decisions, changes propagation, etc.…”

“…The first step of the approach concerns the construction of the event log from the past process executions. These latter represent the process traces generated with respect to the trace metamodel depicted in [22,23] and expressed in XMI (XML Metadata Interchange) format. These traces should be automatically merged into a single XES 7 (eXtensible Event Stream) event log in order to be processed in ProM, the framework in which the selected decision mining technique is developed.…”

“…The execution of this module generates the "statically filtered ranked patterns" file (step5) that associates to each pattern, of the "ranked patterns" file, a decision rule flag whose value is either 1 or 0. 1 means that the pattern satisfies the decision rules in the current context's conditions and is, thus, ready to be proposed to the user (step 6) via the IDSS graphical user interface presented in [18]. The user chooses one of the proposed patterns and starts to execute its first activity (step 7).…”

“…In order to master these complex processes, authors propose a three-layers framework [2]. The first layer uses a process meta-model, that captures the knowledge of the design and supervision processes, in order to model them and thus it helps companies to understand them.…”
