Web applications have been developed from a simple static information webpage to a more complex web application, supporting complex processes and transactional workflows. The existing of numerous modeling concepts and design features in web applications, thus raises new issues on modeling approach. In this paper, we present and discuss the uses of user interaction diagram, object-oriented approach and Unified Modeling Language (UML) notation for complex web applications. Our main objective is to propose a web application design model which is based on UML 2.0 profile and stereotypes. We propose user interaction diagram to capture users' information from use case diagram and specific UML modeling elements to model conceptual, navigational and user interface features of complex web applications. The uniqueness of our proposed design model stands in the design patterns modeling approaches. At the end of the paper, some future enhancements of the design model will be explained and briefly summarized.

CMS-based Web applications have increased their presence in the market because of the advantages they offer with regard to information management, thus offering a new landscape in Web application development. In this paper we analyze the current state-of-the-art on the existing approaches for the development of CMS-based Web applications. To do it, we have followed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). As a result of this SLR we found four approaches in the literature focused on this issue. In this paper we focus our attention in studying the insights of each approach by following four criteria (Web Engineering views, MDA abstraction levels, modeling language and level of automation) and we discuss about the interest shown by the Web Engineering community about the CMS-based Web application development.

Purpose -The main purpose of this paper is to improve a web content management system (WCMS) product line for future implementations by identifying software commonalities in WCMS-based web applications. WCMS plays a central role in modern web application development: most large public and internal web sites are based on a WCMS foundation. If we can improve the implementation process, the effectiveness and efficiency of web application development will increase significantly. Design/methodology/approach -This research identifies reusable solutions from existing WCMS implementations using problem diagrams and structured goal modeling. From configurations were matched with atomic e-business models by linking them to the strategic competencies through bottom-up goal modeling. A designed method was constructed on how requirements can be elicited for WCMS implementations using goal modeling and problem frames. Findings -The resulting method provides insight in relevant e-business models and their relation to software product lines. Moreover, the approach is applied in a WCMS study which demonstrates its applicability. Practical implications -The practical implications of this research is twofold: WCMS developers now have a method to improve their product line based on e-business models; and requirements engineers implementing WCMS can use this model to apply reusable software and prioritize requirements. Both will potentially have a large impact on the effectiveness of implementations since most web applications are developed with WCMS. Originality/value -The paper presents a novel approach for efficient and effective identification of software commonalities. This research is part of the web engineering method that focuses on development of web applications based on WCMSs.
