Engineered Resilient Systems with Value Focused Thinking

Abstract: Complex DoD systems need to be resilient due to evolving adversarial and environmental threats. The DoD created a program called Engineered Resilient Systems (ERS) to increase resilience in future systems. In our ERS research, resilience has been separated into two parts, mission and platform resilience. Mission resilience is the ability of a system to repel, resist, absorb, and recover from environments and threats that occur on planned missions. Platform resilience is the ability of a system to adapt to new … Show more

“…We attribute this to SBD's alternative development requirement, which naturally lends itself to AoA, affordability and DoE applications during tradespace analysis activities. In Group B, we observe greater instances of research applying M&S and requirements development methods to enhance system resilience in uncertain and complex environments 100,108,120 . While we see similar trends in Group A, these two topics occur less frequently in the collection of SBD specific research.…”

“…Using this logic, we are able to include a large number of relevant documents within this review that may have otherwise been missed, enabling a more comprehensive assessment of SBD. We refer to this set of documents as Group B from this point forward 1,66–122 . We provide the complete listing for all Group B documents in Table 2.…”

“…This is similar to resilience definitions and assessments outside of the military context [38][39][40]. Recent resilience analysis work within a military systems context has focused on breaking resilience up into multiple phases of a system design and operation process with associated terminologies to suit each phase of a system's life cycle [41,42] and across multiple methods of increasing resilience in a system [43]. Further, there have been arguments made to use resilience in analysis of alternatives for military systems [44] and from a mission engineering perspective [45].…”

“…The increasing depreciation of the 5-year-old model reflects components associated with physical wear-out of the asset instance, either from accumulation of minor trauma or time and use related product degradation, and the effect of the advance toward obsolescence, for example related to the memory capacity, affecting the apps that can be loaded and used, or changes in the communications standards, currently the introduction of 5G services. These effects are named mission resilience and platform resilience, respectively by Small et al [13]. These factors affect the trade-in value because they influence the price a secondhand buyer is willing to pay because of the expected useful lifespan beyond the date of that secondhand purchase.…”
