Engine Downsizing; Global Approach to Reduce Emissions: A World-Wide Review

Abstract: Engine downsizing is a promising method to reduce emissions and fuel consumption of internal combustion engines. The main concept is reducing engine displacement volume keeping needed output characteristics unchanged. The issue became one of the most filed of interest in recent years after the International Energy Agency defined a target of 50 % reduction in global average emissions by the year 2030. In this review paper, different aspects of researchers’ efforts on engine downsizing are configured and due to … Show more

“…This requires aggressive electrification of vehicles, improved efficiency of internal combustion engines, and transitioning to lower carbon neutral fuels. For internal combustion engines, strategies like engine downsizing, 3 combustion optimization, 4 and electrification 5 can reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions from conventional fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the near term.…”

“…Nowadays, fuel economy and cleaner production are two key factors in developed engines as well as conventional performance parameters such as power-to-weight ratio, maximum provided torque range, and Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) [1][2]. In addition to the well-known emissions, the greenhouse gases, especially 𝐶𝑂 2 , are now considered to be reduced as the main source of global warming in the automotive industry [3][4]. Although a wide range of strategies [5][6] has been employed to achieve this aim, engine downsizing is considered as the most efficient way to enhance the fuel economy and 𝐶𝑂 2 reduction.…”
