Engaging Referring Physicians in the Clinical Trial Process

Abstract: Referring physicians play a vital role in facilitating patient access to clinical trials. Introducing the concept of clinical trials to their patients before referral to the treating oncologist, as well as referring only to oncologists who participate in clinical trials are two simple approaches that can help increase the number of patients willing to participate in clinical research. Educating referring physicians about clinical trials is thus an important and yet overlooked mechanism for increasing accrual t… Show more

“…Despite this research, health care providers rarely refer their patients to participate in health care research and rarely discuss the process and implications of enrolling, which include potential participation in ongoing clinical trials. 66 Researchers who are interested in recruiting chronic disease patients to participate in self-management programs and interventions should develop collaborative, working relationships with health care providers to assist with enrolling patients for the recommended programs. Developing these collaborative relationships can assist health care providers to translate and communicate the importance, benefits, and process of enrolling and participating in chronic disease self-management programs to patients in a way that is understandable, actionable, and sustainable.…”

“…29,30,49,55,56 Due to the pivotal role physicians play in motivating patients to -or also discouraging patients from -taking part in research studies, the communicators, whether physicians or researchers, must not only have a clear understanding of the research themselves but also must have a clear positioning regarding the content and aims, as their opinions and attitudes have a great influence on patients' decision making. 49,57 While current research focuses on the factual content of information in consultations, it to a lesser extent reflects the social influence tactics employed in healthcare settings that impact decision making. 58 Persuasion is a form of social influence and can play an important role in physician-patient communication and can also be regarded a helpful tool, in some cases.…”
