Engaged scholarship in construction management research: the adoption of information and communications technology in construction projects

Abstract: The objective is to explore what engaged scholarship (ES) could mean for construction management research in facilitating interactions between practice and theory. ES aims to develop knowledge that advances both science and practice through engagement of scholars with practice. Three types of ES are discussed: practice research, design research and action research. These three kinds of ES are explained through their different knowledgeaction relations: action theories or 'knowledge about action', design resear… Show more

“…An online survey was conducted to evaluate the impact of research on individuals, companies and the construction sector. In other words, the researchers evaluated how well the developed artefact worked (Voordijk and Adriaanse, 2016) from industry participants' points of view. Another purpose of the survey was to understand how to develop the activities and CI 20,4 management of the consortium.…”

“…Engaged scholarship is seen as a way of bridging the gulf between academic research and policy and practice, thereby rendering academic research relevant to practitioners and wider society. While engaged scholarship has its critics, it also has strong advocates, comprising of researchers from many disciplines and countries, including Barge and Shockley-Zalabak (2008) in education, Hammel et al (2015) in occupational health, Nilson et al (2014) in criminal justice, ter Bogt and van Helden (2014) in accounting, Voordijk and Adriaanse (2016) in construction management, and Voronov (2008) in critical management studies. Engaged scholarship represents an attempt to cut through the wider and longer running rigour–relevance debate (Gulati, 2007) by refuting competing values associated with practice-oriented versus theory-advancing research.…”

“…It was stated that this research field is rather a scientific discipline that uses theories from other scientific disciplines than a theory in itself (Voordijk and Adriaanse 2016). With knowledge from the SCM scientific discipline/research field, this thesis contributes by suggesting SCP as a means to address problems in logistics.…”

“…This thesis's target group includes researchers in the construction management field. Construction management research is vaguely defined, but Voordijk and Adriaanse (2016) describe it as a scientific discipline that seeks to explain phenomena that are related to the design, production and operation of the built environment with the use of theories from other scientific disciplines. This thesis contributes with theories from the SCM scientific discipline/research field in terms of suggesting SCP as a means to address problems in logistics.…”
