We present the role of heat and electricity storage systems on the rapid rise of renewable energy resources and the steady fall of fossil fuels. The upsurge in renewable resources and slump in fossil fuel consumptions is attributed to sustainable energy systems, energy transition, climate change, and clean energy initiatives. The fast growth of renewables brings new design and operational challenges to transition towards 100% renewable energy goal. Energy storage systems can help ride‐through energy transition from hydrocarbon fuels to renewable sources. Nuclear fusion and artificial photosynthesis are the ultimate Holy Grails for permanent clean energy solutions. Plants harvest light and store it in chemical energy to regulate the food supply chain that may be a guideline for an energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Heat and electricity storage devices can account for the periodic nature of solar and wind energy sources. Solar thermal systems for water and space heating are also a viable solution for subzero temperature areas. This study presents the transition of world's energy prospect from fossil fuels to renewables and new advances in energy storage systems.

To meet heating demand without global warming is a huge target for the energy community these days. To attain this challenge, solar energy harvesting to meet domestic hot water demand is a promising solution. Carbon dioxide (CO 2) is becoming ever more significant as heat transporting fluid. Simulationbased efficiency assessment models are requisite for analogous advances. This research presents a dynamic simulation model of high temperature concentrated solar plant using directly heated molten salt to indirectly power a supercritical CO 2 Brayton cycle. Target of the study is to achieve 1 MW generation and simulation work is performed in TRNSYS computer software. The operating conditions for the plant cycle and efficiency for indirectly heated CO 2 recompression Brayton cycle are also calculated with the help of engineering equation solver. The system is divided into three major loops: solar thermal heat collection, power generation, and heat recovery. Results have shown overall cycle efficiency up to 40%. During the day hours from 4688 to 4697, receiver provides a constant outlet temperature of 700 C with a fluid inlet flow rate of 15 kg/s and mediating fluid after exchanging heat enters the receiver's end at 524 C. An optimized value of 2.9 is selected as pressure ratio to meet supercritical conditions at the compressor inlet. Output power generated is 3.035 MW with turbine efficiency is 92%. The power calculated for main compressor and recompressor are 0.68 and 0.228 MW, respectively.

Interdisciplinary energy research has become inevitable in the context of perceived energy break-point after 2050. Power and energy crisis is a matter of life or death for industry and human race on earth. Oil and natural gas peaking alarms started ringing by the start of the 21st century. Available energy reserves are emptying at of thousands of barrels per second and time to discover new energy sources is being wasted to convince and advocate disciplinarians going for interdisciplinary research approach. We will have to invent new ways of supplying 30% of the global energy demand by 2030 and 60% by 2050. It is not possible without putting the emerging bio, nano, and info technologies together in power and energy research laboratories under interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches. Electrical engineers badly need the supportive hand of energy scientists and technologists to overcome global power, energy, food, and water crises. Engineers and scientists often find it difficult to tolerate each other and usually end up with duplicate resources without any presentable output which requires motivation to develop teamwork spirit to succeed. This paper unveils the potential urgency for an interdisciplinary research approach concerning embedded energy research barriers and solutions in developing countries. Enhancing power and energy multidisciplinary research is a vital general formula that can be tailored to specific regional conditions to minimize the greenhorn blues to run local and global interdisciplinary research programs.
