Energy storage sizing by stochastic optimization for a combined wind-wave-diesel supplied system

Abstract: In this paper a stochastic procedure is applied to the problem of sizing storage system for an isolated power system with significant wind and wave energy penetration. The case study has analyzed real data from three Canary Islands (La Gomera, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura) in order to find the optimum energy storage size (ESS) in terms of economic profitability. The results show that the storage deployment is significantly suitable whenever the power penetration of windwave resources is at least 50% of the loca… Show more

“…There were no studies that considered tidal energy as a renewable HRES-OFF resource. Three studies considered waves as a potential energy source [112][113][114]. A study in the subtropical zone applied exergy analysis to an ocean thermal energy conversion system (OTEC) to determine the optimal evaporation and condensation temperatures of different working fluids [115].…”

“…In some cases, the analysis is extended to multiple energy resources for both short-term (power smoothing over few seconds [124]) and long-term ( [125]) applications. It is worth noting that the selected domain of application for the optimal energy storage sizing is quite often that of small islands [122], [126], whose power consumption and power system challenges are, however, similar to those of isolated O&G platforms.…”
