Thermal simulations have become increasingly popular in assessing energy efficiency and predicting thermal behaviors in various structures. Calibration of these simulations is essential for accurate predictions. A crucial aspect of this calibration involves investigating the influence of meteorological variables. This study aims to explore the impact of meteorological variables on thermal simulations, particularly focusing on ships. Using TRNSYS (TRaNsient System Simulation) software (v17), renowned for its capability to model complex energy systems within buildings, the significance of incorporating meteorological data into thermal simulations was analyzed. The investigation centered on a patrol vessel stationed in a port in Galicia, northwest Spain. To ensure accuracy, we not only utilized the vessel’s dimensions but also conducted in situ temperature measurements onboard. Furthermore, a dedicated weather station was installed to capture real-time meteorological data. Data from multiple sources, including Meteonorm and MeteoGalicia, were collected for comparative analysis. By juxtaposing simulations based on meteorological variables against those relying solely on in situ measurements, we sought to discern the relative merits of each approach in enhancing the fidelity of thermal simulations.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transport sector and their effect on air quality are now a major concern, and the electrification of road freight transport is seen as one potential solution. However, this presents a challenge with the increased electricity demand on a depot’s grid connection, and increased costs if this has to be upgraded. This study seeks to evaluate the impact on costs of introducing solar (PV) panels and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) when a company electrifies its fleet, based on two different priorities. On one hand, avoiding the use of the grid at peak price periods at the expense of upgrading the power connection. On the other hand, avoiding any power connection upgrade at the expense of incurring excess capacity charges. These two priorities aim to represent real-life challenges that logistics and commercial companies are facing when it comes to fleet electrification. The choice of prioritising one over the other may be driven by operational requirements and/or technical constraints. For each approach, a different energy management algorithm is developed using MATLAB and Simulink. The results obtained suggest that there is more flexibility in cost reduction when the upgrade of the power connection is not an obstacle. If the upgrade of the power network is not an option, the installation of PV panels and a BESS must be implemented together with other strategies (i.e., smart charging) to make it an economic option.

Performance Assessment of the Heat Recovery System of a 12 MW SOFC-Based Generator on Board a Cruise Ship through a 0D Model

The present work considers a 12 MW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) power plant integrated with a heat recovery system installed on board an LNG-fuelled cruise ship of about 175,000 gross tonnes and 345 m in length. The SOFC plant is fed by LNG and generates electrical power within an integrated power system configuration; additionally, it provides part of the thermal energy demand. A zero-dimensional (0D) Aspen Plus model has been built-up to simulate the SOFC power plant and to assess the performances of the proposed heat recovery system. The model has been validated by comparing the results obtained with data from the literature and commercial SOFC modules. The integrated system has been optimized in order to maximize steam production since it is the most requested thermal source on board. The main design outcome is that the steam produced is made by the recovered water from the SOFC exhaust by about 50–60%, thus reducing the onboard water storage or production. Additionally, results indicate that such an integrated system could save up to about 14.4% of LNG.
