Energy sharing in smart grids : a game theory approach

Abstract

The need for energy conservation, grid reliability, and improved operational efficiencies have led to the changes from conventional electricity grids which have “blind” and manual operations, along with the electromechanical components, to interconnected and flexible “smart grids” that ensure a bidirectional flow of electricity and information between power plants and appliances, and all points in between. This transformation is necessary to meet environmental targets, to accommodate date a greater emphasis on demand response, and to support distributed generation and storage capabilities.
 The smart grid infrastructure can be divided into three main components: i) the smart energy system, ii) the smart information system, and iii) the smart communication system. In this dissertation, we start our study by investigating the energy efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) as key communication enablers in the smart communication system component of the smart grid infrastructure. First of all, we explore how game theory has been used to achieve energy efficiency and maximize network lifetime. The literature is surveyed at different levels: i) Power Control and Medium Access Control (MAC), ii) Routing and Clustering, iii) Coverage and Topology Control, and iv) Data Aggregation, Security, Task Allocation and Energy Harvesting. Second of all, we investigate the energy efficiency in low-data rate Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) by studying the energy consumption of the MAC layer in this kind of networks and its application scenarios in smart grids.
 After that, we shift our attention to the smart energy system component of the smart grid infrastructure. We focus on maximizing the utilization of locally harvested renewable energy in the residential sector. In this regard, renewable energy sharing is proposed as a possible solution to tackle this problem. Two different energy sharing frameworks are proposed for microgrids, where game theory is used as an analytical tool. In the first one, the energy sharing between households is modeled as a repeated game. In this framework, households share their surplus renewable energy with each other directly in a distributed manner. In the second one, a reputation-based energy sharing framework for microgrids with a shared Energy Storage System (ESS) is proposed. In this framework, households share their surplus renewable energy by storing it in the shared storage unit, which manages their demand, and allocates the shared renewable energy among them based on their reputation, represented by the amount of energy they shared previously. We aim at investigating how game theory can increase the efficiency of energy sharing frameworks in smart grids by modeling households’ interactions and providing incentive mechanisms for cooperation. It is expected that this dissertation will fill a gap in the area of smart grids and raise the interest to further explore and develop this promising research area. La necesidad de la conservación de energía, la fiabilidad de la red, y la mejora de la eficiencia operativa han llevado a cambios de a las redes eléctricas convencionales que tienen operaciones "ciegos" y manuales y componentes electromecánicos, a "redes inteligentes" interconectadas y flexibles que aseguren un flujo bidireccional de electricidad y de información entre las centrales eléctricas y electrodomésticos, y todos los puntos intermedios. Esta transformación es necesaria para cumplir objetivos ambientales, para acomodar un mayor énfasis en la respuesta de la demanda, y para soportar capacidades de generación y almacenamiento distribuidos. La infraestructura de red inteligente se puede dividir en tres componentes principales: i) el sistema inteligente de energía, ii) el sistema de información inteligente, y iii) el sistema de comunicación inteligente. En esta disertación, comenzamos nuestro estudio mediante la investigación de la eficiencia energética en redes de sensores inalámbricos (WSNs) como facilitadores de comunicación clave en el componente del sistema de comunicación inteligente de la infraestructura de red inteligente. En primer lugar, se explora cómo la teoría de juegos se ha utilizado para lograr la eficiencia energética y maximizar la vida de la red. Se hace un estudio del estado del arte a diferentes niveles: i) Control de Potencia y Control de Acceso al Medio (MAC), ii) Enrutamiento y clustering, iii) Cobertura y Control de topología, y iv) agregación de datos, seguridad, asignación de tareas y recolección de energía. En segundo lugar, se investiga la eficiencia energética en bajas tasas de transmisión de datos en redes de sensores inalámbricos multimedia (WMSN) mediante el estudio del consumo de energía de la capa MAC en este tipo de redes y sus escenarios de aplicación en las redes inteligentes. Después de eso, dirigimos nuestra atención a los sistemas de energía inteligentes para infraestructuras de smart grids. Nos centramos en maximizar el aprovechamiento de las energías renovables obtenidas localmente en el sector residencial. En este sentido, el intercambio de energía renovable se propone como una posible solución en este escenario. Se proponen dos marcos de reparto de energía diferentes para microgrids, donde se utiliza la teoría de juegos como herramienta de análisis. En la primera, el intercambio de energía entre los hogares se modela como un juego repetido. En este marco, las familias comparten su excedente de energía renovable directamente entre sí de una manera distribuida. En la segunda, se propone un marco de intercambio energético basado en la reputación de microgrids con un sistema de almacenamiento compartido. En este marco, las familias comparten su excedente de energía renovable mediante el almacenamiento en la unidad de almacenamiento compartido, que gestiona su demanda, y asigna la energía renovable compartida entre ellos sobre la base de su reputación, representada por la cantidad de energía que compartían anteriormente. Nuestro objetivo es investigar cómo la teoría de juegos puede aumentar la eficiencia del intercambio de energía en los marcos de las redes inteligentes mediante el modelado de las interacciones de los hogares y proporcionar mecanismos de incentivos para la cooperación. Se espera que esta tesis va a llenar un vacío en el ámbito de las smartgrids y aumentar el interés de explorar y desarrollar aún más en esta área de investigación prometedora
