Energy Security and Renewable Energy: A Geopolitical Perspective

Abstract: This chapter examines the role of renewable energy in shaping energy security against the backdrop of global geopolitical, socioeconomic, and technological uncertainties. The evolving definition of energy security during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries is discussed initially. The dimensions, components, and metrics of energy security are reviewed, including the 4A definition of energy security that comprises physical availability; economic affordability; accessibility from a sociopolitical stand… Show more

“…Even so, the main objectives of such an initiative are effective delivery regulation among different RERs, efficient functioning including its projected smart grid (DC and AC grid) offering enhanced energy quality as well as continuous service. Improved power conservation would then be witnessed, allowing the effective function of the system with high smart grid performance amid undesirable as well as crucial conditions including such variations in power consumption and unpredictable [85][86][87][88][89][90].…”

“…However, the energy revolution alters the way energy and geopolitics interact and redefines the weight of geopolitical risks in energy security. Firstly, although fos-sil fuels are distributed unevenly and linked inherently with geopolitics, the global distribution of renewable energy sources is more evenly spread than fossil fuels (Paravantis & Kontoulis, 2020). Renewable energy is more resistant to geopolitical strife and lessens the negative impacts of geopolitical conflicts on energy security, so as to alleviate the world governments' concerns about the Strait of Hormuz and the political stability in the Middle East.…”

“…Energy source diversification enhances energy security in general (Luft & Korin, 2009), and the pursuit of an optimal energy mix addresses the reliability pillar of energy security (Paravantis & Kontoulis, 2020). The previous section discussed the impact of hydro-dominated energy sector development on attaining energy security and sustainable development in Africa.…”
