Energy consumption reduction under changing climate conditions is a major challenge in buildings design, where excessive energy consumption creates an economic and environmental burden. Improving thermal performance of the buildings through support applying phase change material (PCM) is a promising strategy for reducing building energy consumption under future climate change. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the energy saving potentials in buildings under future climate conditions in the humid and snowy regions in the hot continental and humid subtropical climates of the east Asia (Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong) when various PCMs with different phase change temperatures are applied to a lightweight building envelope. Methodology in this work is implemented in two phases: firstly, investigation of energy saving potentials in buildings through inclusion of three types of PCMs with different phase temperatures into the building envelop separately and use weather file in the present (2017); and, secondly, evaluation of the effect of future climate change on the performance of PCMs by analyzing energy saving potentials of PCMs with 2020, 2050 and 2080 weather data. The results show that the inclusion of PCM into the building envelope is a promising strategy to increase the energy performance in buildings during both heating and cooling seasons in Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong under future climate conditions. The energy savings achieved by using PCMs in those regions are electricity savings of 4.48-8.21%, 3.81-9.69%, and 1.94-5.15%, and gas savings of 1.65-16.59%, 7.60-61.76%), and 62.07-93.33% in Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong, respectively, for the years 2017, 2020, 2050 and 2080. In addition, BioPCM and RUBITHERMPCM are the most efficient for improving thermal performance and saving energy in buildings in the tested regions and years.

Vernacular architecture has evolved over time to reflect and sustainably comply with the environmental and cultural contexts in which it exists. This kind of architecture possesses a variety of original and clever practices and technologies to satisfy various necessities imposed by context. Iran's vernacular architecture has mastered the art of adaptation to context by developing different architectures in different regions of the country. Despite their different appearances, these architectures follow the same logic in spirit: sustainable adaptation to context. This original research work surveys this logic in two regions, one hot-arid and the other hot-arid-windy, in Iran (represented by the city of Yazd and the region of Sistan, respectively) through a comparative study. This paper studies different elements and techniques of sustainability in these areas, reasons for their existence and the factors that have shaped them into the specific way that they are. The main elements that were studied through this survey include: fabric and orientation, sidewalks, facades, materials, entrances, courtyards, basements and cellars, porches, roofs, wind-catchers, and openings. In conclusion, links that connect different specifications of context to different aspects of construction are discovered and their role in overall character of two region's architecture is illustrated so they can be used as guidelines for future designs and constructions.

Abstract. In the paper a special heat storage unit for building applications is presented. It has a form of a ceiling panel that is made of PCM-gypsum mortar composite and it contains internal channels for air flow, since it is designed as a part of ventilation system of the building. The panel works as a regenerative heat exchanger with phase change material (PCM) as a prevailing heat storage medium. When a melting point of PCM is properly chosen it is possible that air temperature flowing into the building reach a level corresponding to thermal comfort conditions, regardless the temperature at the intake. Warm air (during a day) releases heat basically to PCM causing its melting. During night time cool ambient air is heated up while it takes back heat accumulated in PCM. An experimental set-up based on the above concept was developed. A series of tests in different conditions (for variable inlet air temperatures, air flow rates) were performed. Information on thermal performance of the ceiling panel as well as detailed data on heat transfer process were obtained and discussed in the paper.
