O presente estudo trata de uma análise do potencial de recuperação energética de resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSU) e sua consequente redução nas emissões de gases de efeito estufa (GEE). Para o estudo, considerou-se uma produção diária de 330 toneladas de RSU e estimou-se a geração de energia elétrica pela incineração e pela recuperação de metano em aterro sanitário. A geração estimada de metano foi obtida por meio do modelo LandGEM 3.02 e o PCI dos RSU foi calculado por meio da lei de Dulong-Petit. As emissões de GEE foram estimadas de acordo com a metodologia proposta pela UNFCCC (2018). Os resultados mostraram que a incineração dos RSU geraria 77.500 MWh.ano-1 de eletricidade e evitaria a emissão de 22.250 t CO2.ano-1. A recuperação de metano de aterro geraria 23.500 MWh.ano-1 de eletricidade e evitaria a emissão de 12.500 t CO2.ano-1. Assim, em termos de recuperação energética, a incineração foi mais vantajosa, porém a escolha de tecnologias envolve, além de questões técnicas relativas à eficiência do processo, questões ambientais, sociais, políticas e econômicas.

Recycled paper and some hardwood paper often display poorer mechanical properties, which hinder its practical applications and need to be addressed. In this work, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) obtained by a combined process of enzymatic hydrolysis and grinding (EG-CNFs), grinding and microfluidization (GH-CNFs) or TEMPO-mediated oxidation and grinding (TE-CNFs) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, CNFs were made into films on which some characterizations including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV–Vis transmittance spectroscopy were implemented. Results showed that CNF fibrillation was promoted as times of passes increased in microfluidization, and CNFs pretreated by enzyme possessed shorter length. Crystallinity of CNFs was related to CNF manufacturing methods, while CNF films’ transparency was correlated to CNF diameter distributions. Moreover, CNFs were applied with different dosages on recycled and hardwood paper. Lengths of CNFs, strength of CNF network, and pulp properties were critical factors affecting the mechanical strength of CNFs-enhanced paper. GH-CNFs showed better strengthened effect on tensile strength of paper than TE-CNFs and EG-CNFs. The best overall improvement was achieved at GH-CNF10 dosage of 5.0 wt% on hardwood paper. The increment of tensile index, burst index, and folding endurance were 108.32%, 104.65%, and 600%, respectively. This work aims to find out the relationship between production methods and morphologies of CNFs and how the morphological characteristics of CNFs affecting the mechanical performance of paper when they are added as strength additives.

Anti-Thermal Shock Binding of Liquid-State Food Waste to Non-Wood Pellets

The development and implementation of strategies to assist safe and effective transport and storage of pellets in containers and indoor facilities without heating systems are challenging. This study primarily aimed to reshape the organic fraction of municipal solid waste into a liquid-state binder in order to develop freezing–defrosting-proof non-wood pellets. The introduction of the standard solution of food waste into the process of pelleting consisted of stirring it together with the residual biomass from distillation of cellulosic bioethanol or alternatively spraying very fine droplets on the layer of the starting material before it entered the pilot-scale automatic machine at 200 MPa and 125 °C. The addition by spraying of carbohydrate-rich supplement boiled for five minutes caused the pellets to show increases in apparent density (1250.8500 kg·m−3), durability (99.7665%), and hydrophobicity (93.9785%), and consistently prevented them from suffering severe mechanical fracture by thermal shock. The fractal dimension of breakpoints, cracks, and delamination on the finished surface for these products was the smallest at 1.7500–1.7505. Sprayed pellets would fall into the strictest grid of products for residential heat-and-power units, even after freezing and defrosting. The conclusion is therefore that spraying can spectacularly ensure the reliability of liquid-state food waste as an anti-thermal shock binder for non-wood pellets.
