In this study, energy and renewable energy issues were investigated. The goal of the study; Investigation of energy production in OECD countries is the identification of the factors affecting it. As per the cluster analysis conclusions; OECD countries are separated into three groups. Also; Classifying models were used to analyze the relationship between biomass and waste generation; energy use, carbon dioxide emissions, and primary energy consumption obtained in OECD countries. Regression analysis, correlation analysis, and decision tree analysis were applied. Carbon dioxide emissions have been the most influential variable on energy production from biomass and waste. The findings of the study propose to design energy policies towards sustainable goals. The study confirms the hypothesis that the economic cycle will help reduce inefficiencies in the energy sector, resulting in higher yields based on key factors identified from biomass. According to the literature, an investigation on various factors related to the field of biomass has been made. Also, this study examined and compared three important variables, which were determined differently from the literature, with classification analyzes that were not performed before. For this reason, it is a support for the literature and an original study.

Global climate change driven by anthropogenic activities have diverted the attention on the development of the methods for atmospheric carbon dioxide capturing and sequestration, the so called negative emission technologies (NETs). Pyrolysis is one of the most environmentally friendly conversion technologies for waste disposal that are being developed to convert waste materials into energy and valuable products. Biochar is high carbon content pyrogenic solid material obtained by thermal degradation of biomass in an oxygen-free medium. High nutrients content in biochar makes it a suitable material for soil amendment purposes. Furthermore, biochar acts as a carbon sink to reduce atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions thus can play a significant role in the control of environmental pollutants by carbon negative emissions. In this study, the carbon dioxide sequestration potential assessment of a wide range of biomass including agricultural residues, forestry residues, livestock manure and municipal solid waste (MSW) in Turkey have carried out. The results revealed that pyrogenic carbon bio-sequestration in Turkey is possible with negative emissions potential of biomass is 60.38 Mton CO2eq/year, which accounts for 16 % of the total annual carbon dioxide emission. Biochar is an untapped resource for emission abatement strategies.

This study aims to establish the scientific link between the livestock wastes and energy recovery processes to implement the most appropriate technology at the highest economic benefit. The evaluation was based on the recovery of the potential energy of the mixture of four livestock wastes (cattle, sheep, goat, egg chicken) by four different energy recovery processes. Incineration, gasification, pyrolysis at 550°C and 750°C were applied as thermal processes together with the anaerobic digestion as biochemical process. The recovery performance of each process was evaluated within a defined design algorithm considering all significant parameters in seven geographical regions and in Turkey as a whole. Incineration seems to be the most efficient energy recovery process with 0.43 MWe/t for Turkey. Gasification took the second place in the energy recovery ranking with 0.34 MWe/t, 21% less than incineration. Pyrolysis expressed an energy recovery rate of 0.15 MWe/t at 550°C and a twice higher rate at 750°C, at a level close to gasification. Anaerobic digestion exerted a recovery potential of 0.21 MWe/t for the livestock waste considered. Energy recovery from livestock waste not only contributes to energy production, but also provides compliance with the concept of reducing emissions and sustainable environment.
