Energy Performance and Thermal Comfort of a High Efficiency House: RhOME for denCity, Winner of Solar Decathlon Europe 2014

Abstract: The increase of people living in large cities and the expansion of new urban areas are keys to defining new sustainable models. It is estimated that about 70% of the EU population lives in urban areas, and it is expected to reach 80% by 2030. Consequently, it is important to find a new concept of buildings that can reduce the total energy consumption. The Solar Decathlon is an international university competition, born in 2002, created by the U.S. State Energy Department (DOE). Students are challenged to desig… Show more

“…The contest allows universities and businesses to develop and test initiatives related to human dwelling spaces, from energy optimisation through the use of different high-efficiency systems and passive design [ 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ], to the analysis of construction elements employed in every solution [ 53 , 54 , 55 ], as well as using different home automation tools or studying the comfort conditions of the dwelling [ 56 ], and, as a result, their effect on the health of the user ( Figure 1 ).…”

“…The version of the competition, Solar Decathlon Latin America and Caribbean 2015 (Cali, Colombia), to which the prototype presented in this article was submitted, unlike previous editions [8][9][10][11][12][13], was given a social approach, which allowed researching on other architectural typologies and sustainable-healthy construction solutions, where the transfer to society of the environmental strategies implemented in these prototypes gained special relevance. The objective was no longer to present a housing cell where excellent comfort conditions and minimum energy consumption were achieved on the basis of technology decontextualized socioeconomically from the society where the competition was held [14].…”
