We have studied the ground state of the unbound, very neutron-rich isotope of hydrogen 5 H, using the 6 He(d, 3 He) 5 H reaction in inverse kinematics at a bombarding energy of E( 6 He)=55A MeV. The present results suggest a ground-state resonance energy ER=2.4±0.3 MeV above the 3 H+2n threshold, with an intrinsic width of Γ=5.3±0.4 MeV in the 5 H system. Both the resonance energy and width are higher than those reported in some, but not all previous studies of 5 H. The previously unreported 6 He(d, t) 5 Heg.s. reaction is observed in the same measurement, providing a check on the understanding of the response of the apparatus. The data are compared to expectations from direct two-neutron and dineutron decay. The possibility of excited states of 5 H populated in this reaction is discussed using different calculations of the 6 He→ 5 H+p spectroscopic overlaps from shell-model and ab-initio nuclear-structure calculations.

Alternative similarity renormalization group generators in nuclear structure calculations

The similarity renormalization group (SRG) has been successfully applied to soften interactions for ab initio nuclear calculations. In almost all practical applications in nuclear physics, an SRG generator with the kinetic energy operator is used. With this choice, a fast convergence of manybody calculations can be achieved, but at the same time substantial three-body interactions are induced even if one starts from a purely two-nucleon (N N ) Hamiltonian. Three-nucleon (3N ) interactions can be handled by modern many-body methods. However, it has been observed that when including initial chiral 3N forces in the Hamiltonian, the SRG transformations induce a nonnegligible four-nucleon interaction that cannot be currently included in the calculations for technical reasons. Consequently, it is essential to investigate alternative SRG generators that might suppress the induction of many-body forces while at the same time might preserve the good convergence. In this work we test two alternative generators with operators of block structure in the harmonic oscillator basis. In the no-core shell model calculations for 3 H, 4 He and 6 Li with chiral N N force, we demonstrate that their performances appear quite promising.
