Energy leakage analysis of the radar and communication integrated waveform

Abstract: When minimum shift keying (MSK)'s carrier is changed as the linear frequency modulation (LFM) signal, it is called as MSK-LFM for short. It is a new type of the radar-communication multifunctional integrated waveform. Under the assumption that the bandwidth of the radar receiver is equal to that of the LFM signal, the energy leakage of MSK-LFM is analysed. The trade-off between the number of modulated bits and the energy leakage is derived analytically. The derived equation demonstrates that the relationship b… Show more

“…The Chirp-MSK signal was adopted to construct a joint radar-communication signal for the perfect spectrum characteristics, attributing to the continuous phase of MSK. The spectrum equation, time-frequency analyse, and AF equation of Chirp-MSK signal are beyond the scope of this article, which are discussed in detail in [13][14][15][16][17]. Compared with the Chirp-BPSK signal and Chirp-MSK signal [13], our JRC signal has better performance in radar detection in theory.…”

“…Therefore, the time-frequency analysis is employed to explain the AF characteristics. The short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is the main method of linear timefrequency analysis [13,14]. The basic idea of STFT is to use a fixed sliding time window to cut the original signal into many tiny time intervals.…”

“…Considering the convenience of the design, this paper finally decides to use MSK as the communication method of our JRC signal. MSK signal is a special form of binary CPM signal, with the characteristics of h = 0:5 and I n ∈ f±1g [12][13][14].…”

“…Linear frequency modulation (LFM) wave is a popular waveform in the fields of radar, detection, and sonar, which has excellent range resolution and velocity resolution, and many JRC technologies adopt LFM wave as the seminal waveform. Literature [12][13][14] had promoted LFM-MSK signal as JRC waveform and analyzed the ambiguity function (AF) characteristics; researchers also proposed methods to reduce the energy leakage and the increase communication throughout JRC waveform. In literature [15,16], spread spectrum technology was introduced into the JRC waveform design, and combined with small angle BPSK and LFM waves, the MSK signal mentioned in literature [11] under the low data volume condition.…”
