Energy Harvesting and Wireless Energy Transmission for Embedded SHM Sensor Nodes

Abstract: In this article, we present experimental investigations using energy harvesting and wireless energy transmission to power wireless structural health monitoring sensor nodes. The goal of this study is to develop sensing systems that can be permanently embedded within a host structure without the need for an on-board power source. With this approach the required energy will be harvested from the ambient environment, or periodically delivered by a radio-frequency energy source to supplement conventional harvestin… Show more

“…These theoretical estimates were however obtained for a small scale piezoelectric harvester with a 2.5 g tip mass. In the paper of Farinholt et al [6], the use of multi-sources of ambient energy was experimentally investigated (thermal and vibration energy harvesters). Harvesting ambient bridge vibrations appeared to be most promising from the test results that were carried out with a piezo-electric generator of cantilevered beam type, 20 cm length.…”

“…Recently, progresses in compact circuit technologies like sensors and wireless systems have made it possible to use autonomous systems. These systems do not need an independent source for supplying energy and they can obtain it from environmental energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy and thermal gradients, Nagayama et al (2010), Park et al (2010), Farinholt et al (2010). But, each of the mentioned environmental resources has their own problems.…”
