Wet-ground empty fruit bunches (EFBs), dry-ground EFB, and pelletized EFB were gasified in a laboratory-scale updraft fixed-bed reactor at differing temperatures and equivalent ratios (ERs) between 0.19 and 0.78 to evaluate the performance and quality of the syngas under autothermal operating conditions. In addition, the theoretical estimation of the key performance indicator of the ashes on the performance of the gasification process was obtained. The results show that for ERs > 0.4 the autothermal operating condition was achieved for pretreatments with pelletized and dry-ground EFBs, with reactor operating temperatures T > 700 °C. With wet EFB, this condition is achieved at any ER value. The average composition of the syngas from pelletized EFB presented the best average concentrations of the combustible species CO, H2, and CH4 when the ER values were between 0.25 and 0.40. The highest hot and cold thermal efficiency values were obtained for the gasification of EFB pellets with ER values between 0.25 and 0.40. For ground EFB, increases in the ER value led to improvements in hot thermal efficiency. Finally, during the EFB pellet gasification tests, no agglomeration and sintering problems were evidenced in comparison with wet-ground and dry-ground EFBs that showed slag formation, especially at ER < 0.46.

Coffee husks represent about 12 wt % of coffee grains, generating a significant impact on the environment because of its inadequate disposal. In Colombia, this waste presents an energy resource opportunity equivalent to over 49,106 TJ per year. However, several challenges related to this type of biomass, such as the moisture content, the irregular shapes, and the low bulk density, make its use difficult in current burners. Thus, in this paper, the combustion of coffee husk pellets was studied in detail to design a high-efficiency burner to produce energy for coffee drying. The pellets were prepared in a pelletizer with 15% moisture and 20% yield and burned in a bench-scale lateral reactor to determine the energy density. It was found that the combustion properties of coffee husk depend on the specifics of the pelleting process. The energy density values were I v = 0.789 MW/m 3 and I g = 0.007 MW/m 2 , which could be used to design the combustion chamber for coffee husk burning.

In this paper, the effect of co-firing semi-coke in a 300 MW tangentially fired boiler was numerically investigated. The results indicate that the incomplete combustion heat loss and NO x emission both increase with semi-coke co-fired ratio. Semi-coke may be injected into the furnace at a different height, which can lead to different thermal efficiency and NO x emission. It is suggested that semi-coke should not be fed from the top or bottom layer burners, since this could give rise to high carbon content respectively in fly ash and bottom slag. In addition, injecting semi-coke from the top burners could significantly increase the NO x emission. Under 1/2 co-firing ratio, the optimal fuel allocation is that feeding semi-coke from the B, D, and E layer burners. The growth in semi-coke particle size could increase the unburned carbon loss and NO x emission. It is highly recommended to reduce the unburned carbon loss under semi-coke co-fired condition by increasing the stoichiometric ratio of primary air for semi-coke. As it is increased from 0.25 to 0.3, the combustion efficiency of the co-fired condition is 99.47%, the same as when only firing bituminous coal, and the NO x emission is about 30% higher.
