Energy efficient wireless sensor network communications based on computational intelligent data fusion for environmental monitoring

Abstract: The study presents a novel computational intelligence algorithm designed to optimise energy consumption in an environmental monitoring process: specifically, water level measurements in flooded areas. This algorithm aims to obtain a tradeoff between accuracy and power consumption. The implementation constitutes a data aggregation and fusion in itself. A harsh environment can make the direct measurement of flood levels a difficult task. This study proposes a flood level estimation, inferred through the measurem… Show more

“…There are two important features, including management and real-time performance requirement. In [4], different models are discussed to implement Cyber-Physical system on the basics of 3S design that is, stability, security and systematics. Although the paper emphasized the stability, security and systematics when design a CPS, it ignore the real-time performance requirement and device management.…”

“…This scenario also applies when the sensor tries to associate to an AP for a predetermined number of times and fails, leading to the conclusion that the access point is no longer active One of the most common applications employing wireless sensors is represented by wireless sensor networks (WSNs). These consist of a large number of sensor nodes, communicating in a wireless fashion among each other or to an external base-station [12]. The first field where they had been used and where the potential is huge is represented by environmental monitoring, this being the primary purpose of deploying sensor networks [12].…”

“…Recent advancement in wireless electronic technology offers the potential for inexpensive measurements of environmental parameters in space and time using miniaturized electronic sensors and wireless communication characterized by low cost, low power requirements, and fast installation (Glasgow et al 2004;Hart and Martinez 2006;Wang et al 2006;Yick et al 2008;Rundel et al 2009;Horsburg et al 2010;Larios et al 2012;Sunita et al 2012). Application of the new sensor technology to stream network monitoring is attractive because a sensed system could be used to identify hot spots of high sediment and pollutant flux, could be useful for calibrating numerical models, and generally provides a better understanding of stream network connectivity and geomorphology under different flow regimes.…”
