Energy-efficient link assessment in wireless sensor networks

Abstract: Abstrncf-For energyeonstrained stationary wireless networks of sensom, selection of links with high quality rate helps to ensure reliable long-term operation. During the implementation of a protocol targeting industrial applications of such systems, it was found that it is advantageous to acquire accurate information about the availability and quality of the RF communication links prior to the network topology formation. "Link assessment" as part of the initialization process, accomplishes this task by assessi… Show more

“…Existing approaches to the neighbor discovery problem when nodes have omni-directional antennas can be classified into 3 categories, viz. randomized [13,3], deterministic [9], and multi-user detection-based [1,11]. However, these solutions require either apriori knowledge of the number of neighbors [13,3,9], or node synchronization [13,9].…”

“…The best Hello message might depend on the distinctiveness of the broadcasting base station, on security considerations, or on the physical layer quality. Another related work attempted to reduce neighbor discovery time process by improving the broadcast rate of the HELLO messages [10,11]. In both works, the central node performs the neighbor discovery process.…”

“…This is a long-term process, whereby optimization is vital for extending the network lifetime. When the sensor initiates the continuous neighbor discovery, it shows that a node is already responsive from many of its immediate neighbors, and can, therefore, accomplish the task with these neighbors to consume minimum energy [10,11]. In contrast, each sensor in a distinct fashion must accomplish an initial neighbor discovery.…”
