Energy efficient GPS sensing with cloud offloading

Abstract: Location is a fundamental service for mobile computing. Typical GPS receivers, although widely available, consume too much energy to be useful for many applications. Observing that in many sensing scenarios, the location information can be post-processed when the data is uploaded to a server, we design a Cloud-Offloaded GPS (CO-GPS) solution that allows a sensing device to aggressively duty-cycle its GPS receiver and log just enough raw GPS signal for postprocessing. Leveraging publicly available information s… Show more

“…To identify an optimal path for a particular location, user must have to define specific source-destination point. Using GPS coordinate service the latitudes and longitudes of user defined source and destination points are determined [30] [31] [32]. Therefore, (s; d) input parameter can be functioned as:…”

“…Location, context, and activity-aware selective sensing is used to reduce the consumption of energy, storage, and data processing requirements [16]. The cloud-offloaded global positioning system (CO-GPS) which provides sensing devices to assure duty cycle of the GPS receiver device and logging the millisecond raw data from the GPS signal for processing technique is helpful to conserve energy [17]. Collaborative sensing and aggregation of information using trusted middleware provide energy saving [18].…”

“…To relieve this problem, some alternative positioning techniques for smartphones have been studied [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Cell-PS (Cell-ID Positioning Scheme) is one of the representative techniques used for the smartphone positioning instead of GPS.…”

“…WiFi-PS uses the Media Access Control (MAC) address of WiFi access points and delivers the address to the server for positioning [18]. The accuracy of WiFi-PS depends on the number of locations stored in the database and the access point density [16,19]. The variations of signals can cause large error and the maximum error would be around 1,000 meters [19].…”
