Energy-Efficient Designs of Thermally Coupled Distillation Sequences for Four-Component Mixtures

Abstract: A design procedure for thermally coupled distillation sequences for the separation of fourcomponent mixtures is presented. The schemes analyzed include a sequence with a side rectifier and a side stripper and a sequence with a prefractionator (Petlyuk-type column). Initial designs for the thermally coupled distillation sequences are obtained from the tray distribution of a conventional distillation sequence and then optimized for energy consumption using two interconnecting flows as search variables. Several t… Show more

“…In this example, instead of a single column we optimize a given sequence of partially thermally coupled distillation sequences. Information about thermally coupled distillation can be found, for example in (Agrawal, 1996;Blancarte-Palacios et al, 2003;José A. Caballero, 2009;J. A. Caballero & Grossmann, 2001José A. “…The Petlyuk column provides a fully interconnected structure with two thermal couplings that result in vapor interconnections flowing back and forth between the columns (Hernán-dez et al, 2005). These sequences provide energy savings of up to 30% over the conventional direct and indirect distillation sequences (Tedder and Rudd, 1978a;Alatiqi and Luyben, 1985;Triantafyllou and Smith, 1992;Finn, 1993;Hernández and Jiménez, 1996;Hernández and A. Jiménez, 1999;Blancarte-Palacios et al, 2003).…”
