This paper introduces a novel MILP approach for the design of distillation columns sequences of zeotropic mixtures explicitly including from conventional to fully thermally coupled sequences and divided wall columns with a single wall.The model is based on the use of two superstructure levels. In the upper level a superstructure that includes all the basic sequences of separation tasks and all the possibilities of heat exchange (condensers and reboilers). In the lower level an extended tree that explicitly includes all the alternatives for a given separation task (different thermal states and compositions of the feed to a given separation task). In that way, it is possible to a priori optimize all the possible separation tasks involved in the superstructure. A set of logical relationships relates the feasible sequences (upper level) with the optimized tasks in the extended tree resulting in a MILP to select the optimal sequence. Performance of the model in terms of robustness and computational time is illustrated with several examples.

AbstractIn this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for the rigorous design of distillation columns that integrates a process simulator in a generalized disjunctive programming formulation. The optimal distillation column, or column sequence, is obtained by selecting, for each column section, among a set of column sections with different number of theoretical trays. The selection of thermodynamic models, properties estimation etc., are all in the simulation environment. All the numerical issues related to the convergence of distillation columns (or column sections) are also maintained in the simulation environment. The model is formulated as a Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP) problem and solved using the logic based outer approximation algorithm without MINLP reformulation. Some examples involving from a single column to thermally coupled sequence or extractive distillation shows the performance of the new algorithm.

Distillation is a common energy-intensive process. Accordingly, it is the rst process to be addressed to improve the energy e ciency over both the short-and long-term. Recent studies and industrial applications have proven that advanced process integration and process intensi cation techniques such as the use of a thermally coupled distillation sequence (TCDS) and a dividing wall column (DWC) require the lowest amount of energy for the separation of mixtures into pure product streams. This paper reviews some energy-e cient distillation technologies that can be used in a retro t design. The research on and implementation of retro ts using a TCDS and DWC are reviewed. This report proposes coupled schemes as alternatives to using a Petlyuk column that do not have the classical problem of controlling the vapor transfer from one column to another and have not previously been proposed for retro ts. These schemes are expected to make signi cant contributions to improving the energy e ciency and mitigating CO 2 emission in the retro tting of distillation systems. The authors evaluated a solution for retro tting azeotropic and extractive distillation systems. Various issues such as the constraints, techno-economic analysis, controllability, and operability are discussed brie y to provide more insight into the application of TCDS and DWC technologies in the retro t.
