Energy-Efficient Computation Offloading for Wearable Devices and Smartphones in Mobile Cloud Computing

Abstract: Abstract-Wearable devices are becoming increasingly popular and are expected to become essential in our everyday life. Despite continuous improvement of hardware, the lifetime of mobile devices and their capabilities still remain a concern. Small size of batteries of smart watches, glasses, helmets and gloves limits the amount of computing, storage and communication resources. Mobile cloud computing can augment the capabilities of wearable devices by helping to execute some of the computing tasks in the cloud.… Show more

“…Ad hoc cloud is another alternative solution that provides cloud computing in an ad hoc environment by combining the computing and storage of the proximate heterogeneous user devices. [2][3][4] However, deciding the appropriate proximate device for task offloading, and establishing the synchronization among user equipment, security, and privacy are the key issues that are to be addressed in this ad hoc cloud environment. Cisco introduced the fog computing model to provide proximate services to the huge number of edge devices on the web.…”

“…To address the issues on the preservation of battery power through non-intermittent connectivity, Ragona et al proposed a centralized framework (ECO-CLOUD) using mobile cloud computing through Near Field Communication (NFC) interfaces for a multi-client application [22].A distributed multisite computation offloading using genetic algorithm has been proposed by Zeinab et al for a multi-user environment. The authors in [23] targets to optimize the overall energy consumption and response time by performing efficient offloading.…”
