The overhead of a particular node in the network depends on its position with respect to packet forwarding capability and total number of nodes in direct contact. In cognitive radio network, the primary user detection and spectrum sharing mechanism consist of two phases which constitutes the sensing mechanism as first phase and second phase of spectrum allocation along with finalization of end to end route of communication. The base idea of route establishment is derived from AODV protocol while proposing the traffic aware route establishment mechanism. The established route by using simple AODV has lots of limitations such as common router selection in multiple routes due to its direct being in range scenario.The proposed method shows significant improvement in energy efficiency due to reduction in overall overhead based on dual valued information exchange based route establishment mechanism. The results obtained thorough simulations show better improvement in the energy efficiency.

Cognitive network is the solution for today’s spectrum scarcity problem. The cognitive network allows secondary users to use free licensed bands on temporary basis to access network resources. The energy consumption for battery operated devices is most essential parameter to be considered to keep devices active for longer time span. This triggers the requirement of energy efficiency in cognitive radio network. The energy consumption due to sensing mechanism and energy consumption during communication sessions for leased time span are two aspects of consideration in cognitive network. This paper contributes for modification in protocol for energy efficiency in communication sessions to enhance the lifetime of devices. At the same time delay optimization for congestion control along with maximum resource access facility is considered while modifying the protocol. A multilayer strategy designed, is responsible for optimized energy, optimized delay and congestion avoidance as an additional outcome. The performance evaluation shows that proposed protocol mechanism is responsible for enhancing energy efficiency with controlled delays in communication sessions.

The increase of application areas in wireless sensor networks demands novel solutions in terms of energy consumption and radio frequency management. Cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs) are key for ensuring efficient spectrum management, by making it possible to use the unused licensed frequency spectrum together with the unlicensed frequency spectrum. Sensor nodes powered by energy-constrained batteries necessarily require energy-efficient protocols at the routing and medium access control (MAC) layers. In CRSNs, energy efficiency is more important because the sensor nodes consume additional energy for spectrum sensing and management. To the best of authors’ knowledge, there is no survey on “energy-efficient” MAC protocols for CRSNs in the literature, even though a conceptual review on MAC protocols for CRSNs was presented at a conference recently. In this paper, energy-efficient MAC protocols for CRSNs are extensively surveyed and qualitatively compared. Open issues, and research challenges in the design of MAC protocols for CRSNs, are also discussed.
