The transportation sector generates enormous amount of environmental emission. This study aims to assess the environmental impact of the environmental emissions in a transportation infrastructure project life cycle. Using the fast track transportation project in China as a case study, the materials used and the energy consumed over the life cycle were converted into environmental emissions. The life cycle of fast track transportation project was divided into three phases including construction, maintenance and repair, and demolition phases. Both qualitative and quantitative method were applied to explore the environmental impact of transportation project. The life cycle assessment (LCA) method was used for the development environmental impact assessment (EIA) model to analyze the contribution of each process in the transportation project life cycle. The empirical results show that the construction phase has the highest environmental impact (62.7%) in the fast track transportation project life cycle, followed by the demolition (35.8%) and maintenance phases (1.7%). Among the materials used in the fast track transportation project, steel has the highest proportion of environmental impact in the construction phase (55.5%). This indicates the enormous environmental impact of the construction phase in fast track transportation project life cycle results from the use of steel material. This study contributes to reducing environmental emissions by revealing the greatest phase of environmental impact and material-source of environmental impact over the life cycle in a transportation infrastructure project.

The construction of highways consumes a large amount of energy and materials and emits a large amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In order to grasp the carbon emission law of expressways in Northwest China. By proposing the accounting method of carbon emission during the construction period of highways in Northwest China. The characteristics of carbon emissions during the construction period of highways in Northwest China and the differences with other regions were calculated and analysed based on actual cases in different regions. Sensitivity analyses were carried out on the influencing factors of carbon emissions. A prediction model of carbon emissions during the construction period of highways in Northwest China is also established.The results of the study show that: (1) That in more than 65% of the carbon emissions from the material production stage; the construction stage, land acquisition and removal stage and material transportation stage accounted for 16.52%, 12.31% and 1.96% of the whole carbon emission, respectively. (2) The carbon emission intensity of expressways in Northwest China is concentrated in the range of 15 ~ 35 t CO2eq / m. This is significantly higher than 5 ~ 30 t CO2eq / m in other regions. (3) The sensitivity analysis finds that factors such as steel reinforcement, cement, and bridge-to-tunnel ratio can significantly and sensitively influence the carbon emissions of the highway during the construction period.

There is still a lack of suitable methods for evaluating pavement functional performance according to the characteristics of real-world environment and traffic. This study developed an acceleration test method based on the Driving Wheel Pavement Analyser (DWPA) to evaluate the anti-sliding properties, anti-stripping properties, and tire–pavement noise of AC-13, SMA-13, and OGFC-13 asphalt mixtures, and MS-1, MS-2, and MS-3 micro-surfacing materials. The results indicate that the OGFC-13 mixture exhibited the largest texture depth, and the SMA-13 mixture exhibited the largest British pendulum number (BPN) at the end of the test. The MS-3 material had the best anti-sliding performance among the micro-surfacing materials. Coarse gradation improved the anti-stripping performance of the micro-surfacing materials. The tire–pavement noise for all materials increased with the increase of wheel repetitions. The OGFC-13 mixture and MS-3 micro-surfacing material exhibited the best and worse noise reduction performance, respectively. The new measurement method for evaluating the pavement surface functional performance was proved to be efficient.
