Energy Consumption Comparison of a Single Variable-Speed Pump and a System of Two Pumps: Variable-Speed and Fixed-Speed

Abstract: The energy efficiency of a multi-pump system consisting of two low-power (0.75 kW) pumps operating in parallel mode and a single-pump mechanism (1.5 kW) is compared in this study. For this purpose, mathematical models, experimental data, and data retrieved from the manuals provided by the pump manufacturers are used. The single-pump system is fed by a single variable speed drive. A multi-pump system running in parallel mode consists of two pumps. One of them is driven by an induction motor connected directly t… Show more

“…Therefore, the effective functioning of hydraulic systems with pumping stations ensures energy saving requirements [2,3]. To solve the problems of energy saving at pumping stations, various methods and methods are used: the use of frequency converters [4,5,6], methods for choosing energy-efficient methods for regulating the operation of pumping units taking into account specific conditions [7], improving methods for calculating structures of structures [8], choosing equipment during reconstruction and modernization [9,10] and a rational control system of pumping stations [11,12,13]. Accurate energy consumption accounting is necessary to ensure the energy saving requirement and the application and implementation of the above methods and means [14,15].…”

“…Based on their respective mechanical models, Vermunt et al [20], Ogata et al [21], and Zheng et al [22] studied the characteristics of their research objects under variable rotating speeds, such as rotation stall, additives for drag reduction, and vibration behaviors. Owing to the potential energy savings, the implementation of variable-frequency drives in electric motors has also been evaluated [23][24][25]. Moreover, Tanaka and Tabaru [26] studied the transient behavior of a centrifugal pump during rapid start-up.…”

“…Parallel pump sets are often used to achieve this goal when large, high or wide flow regulation is required. When parallel pump sets are used, the life cycle cost of all components of a pumping station can be significantly reduced compared to a single pump unit of the same rated power [11] and [12]. Therefore, it is necessary to study the energy efficiency of the parallel pump set during the whole life cycle.…”
