Energy Cell Simulation for Sector Coupling with Power-to-Methane: A Case Study in Lower Bavaria

Abstract: In this study, the possibility of sector coupling with biological Power-to-Methane to support and stabilize the energy transition of the three major sectors of electricity, heat, and gas was addressed. For this purpose, the energy cell simulation methodology and the Calliope tool were utilized for energy system optimization. This combination provides detailed insights into the existing dependencies of consumers and fossil and renewable energy suppliers on a local scale. In this context, Power-to-Methane repres… Show more

“…The first step is to identify the final consumers' energy demand according to their sectors of activity, such as electricity and heat. Secondly, the on-site renewable electricity generation was calculated from PV power energy based on the calculation tools of renewables.ninja for RES sources [20,21]. Third, a Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer (PEM) for H2 production (kgH2) was defined due to its operational flexibility and the costs of such technology at the country level.…”

“…An estimate of the current prices for the hydrogen storage system (HSS) indicates a price for electrolysis of about 1050-1060 USD/(kW), with a lifetime of 18 years [21,22]. Electrolyzers will have to have flexible behaviour to load variations but also frequent starts and stops.…”

“…In addition, the authors provided a revised version of the uDEAS method, which stands for "univariate dynamic encoding algorithm for searches," as a new optimization strategy. Bauer et al [102] investigated the idea of merging biological power-to-methane conversion to help and maintain the energy transition of power, heat, and gas. To improve the energy system, the Calliope tool was employed.…”
