Energy balance in adolescent girls: The trial of activity for adolescent girls cohort

Abstract: Objectives To study correlates of change in BMI percentile and body fat among adolescent girls Design and Methods A longitudinal prospective study following 265 girls from the Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls (TAAG) cohort measured in 8th grade and during 10 and 11th grade or 11th and 12th grade. Twice during 2009-2011 girls wore an accelerometer and completed a food frequency questionnaire and 7-day diary documenting trips and food eaten away from home and school. Physical activity, BMI, and percent b… Show more

“…Particularly with light PA, there were significant differences between the 7th graders and the other grades. The girls in this study were more active than in the study of Cohen, Ghosh-Dastidar, & Lytle (2014) and in that of Marques et al (2015). In the present study, the average MVPA of the 8th-grade girls was 75 MVPA of 34 minutes per day, with sedentary time being 9 hours 8 minutes.…”

“…As a part of the Physical Education Homework Study, adolescent girls' objectively measured PA and self-reported PE homework were examined. The girls were more active compared to those in other PA studies (Ruiz et al, 2011;Cohen, Ghosh-Dastidar, & Lytle, 2014;Marques et al, 2015); 38% of the girls reached the 60-minute MVPA recommendations (Currie et al, 2008). The PE homework comprised an average of 34 minutes of active time per week.…”

“…Indeed, increased physical activity has been associated with greater reductions in body fat, but not zBMI. 25 Research has also shown that FAFH is negatively, 26 and diet quality is positively 27 associated with exercise in adults, which may suggest that children who increased HEI-2005 scores may also have increased their physical activity. To test this hypothesis, analyses were run in a subsample of subjects who had complete physical activity data (N=129) using the energy balance behaviors as covariates.…”

“…Nonetheless, many of these studies employed a cross-sectional design and did not isolate the effects of moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activities. Therefore, there is still little information regarding the specific effects of moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activities on BF [ 15 , 16 ].…”
