Energy and Microclimate Simulation in a Heritage Building: Further Studies on the Malatestiana Library

Abstract: Historical and heritage (especially UNESCO) buildings need a specific, peculiar approach regarding energy performance, energy behavior, and indoor microclimate. Comparing a new building with a historical (UNESCO) building, it is evident that the degrees of freedom for implementing energy efficiency in historical buildings are strongly limited. Several constraints about the materials, the geometry, and the structures do not allow a comprehensive enhancement of energy performance or microclimate parameters. In t… Show more

“…The numerical results are affected by limitations from the software features affecting also their assessment and their mathematical post-processing [23]. As a matter of fact, it should be pointed out that not all the applications could evaluate all the parameters and it is very important from a probabilistic point of view [24], especially in historic buildings [25]. Even if the aim of the study is not to make a ranking list, these lacks affect the final judgment on some of the software.…”

“…The acoustical measurements were performed, in the first campaign of measurements in 2002, by positioning the sound source in 2 positions and the microphones in 54 positions between the stage and balcony, while in the second campaign in 2007, measurements are carried out by the sound source in 4 positions and the microphones in 66 positions between the stage and balcony. This could allow the opportunity to test innovative materials [24] and to build mathematical models to investigate deeply the acoustic phenomena [25] or simulation tool to check performance [26], even in historical buildings [27].…”

“…From this description, it emerges that no HVAC systems were conceived and, subsequently, modern high-tech solutions for thermal management do not fit for it [14] while, detailed analysis and tailored derived design should be done for handling carefully this existing building and preserving its architectural features [15]. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that so simple design is often discussed in the literature as the one performing in operation conditions most closely to its design ones, properly connecting those two phases [16].…”
