Energy and Exergy Analyses of Rice Drying in a Novel Electric Stationary Bed Grain-Drying System with Internal Circulation of the Drying Medium

Abstract: In our study, we developed a system to reduce both energy consumption and pollutant discharge during the drying process. We present a new technology, a stationary bed grain-drying test device based on the internal circulation of the drying medium (ICODM). A rice-drying experiment was carried out inside of it, and the influences of air temperature (AT) and air velocity (AV) on the energy and exergy efficiencies (EEE) as well as the improvement potential rate (IPR) and the sustainability index (SI) of the rice-d… Show more

“…This recirculation ratio increases the mixing temperature of the air entering the system, reducing the energy required by the heater to raise the temperature to the dryer's operating condition, EHeat, due to the reduction of the thermal gradient. These results are opposite to those recently presented for rice drying using exhaust air recirculation (Wang et al, 2022). This is because the process energy consumption is affected by the initial moisture content of the deep bed.…”

“…Drying Effect. At present, China's grain drying machinery used for drying sterile seeds mainly includes horizontal circulating vertical dryers, mixed circulating vertical dryers, static horizontal dryers, improved smoke oven, and mixed flowing static chamber dryers [19]. According to the drying principle and mechanical structure, it can be divided into intermittent drying and continuous drying modes [20].…”
