Energy and amino acid requirements of gestating and lactating sows

Abstract: In the Netherlands, energy and amino acid recommendations for pigs are published by the Centraal Veevoederbureau (CVB, Central Bureau for Livestock Feeding). The CVB recommendations for sows, have not been updated since 1995. Because the litter size and milk production of the sows have increased in the last 20 years and sows have become heavier and have less backfat, the energy and amino acid recommendations from 1995 had to be updated. The updated energy and amino acid recommendations for parity 1 to 5 gestat… Show more

“…Obstetric assistance and oxytocin hormone were not provided to the sows during farrowing. The piglets were individually weighed again at 3 days old to determine the sow's milk yield by calculating the piglets' litters body weight gain multiplied by 4.2 [31,32]. After weighing, piglets were cross-fostered according to their dietary treatment to standardize a litter size of 11-13 piglets per sow.…”

“…The milk yield calculation for Days 1-3 involved determining the total weight gained by the live-born piglets and multiplying it by 4.2. Similarly, calculation of the total milk yield from Days 1-28 was performed by multiplying the piglets' litter size weight gained at weaning by a factor of 4.2 [16,26,27]. Subsequently, piglets were cross-fostered within groups to obtain the experimental litter size of 11-13 piglets per sow.…”

“…At 28 days of age, the piglets were weighed individually to measure their body weight gain and calculate the sows' milk yield based on the litters' weight gain. The total milk yield from Days 1-28 was determined by multiplying the litter size weight gain at weaning by a factor of 4.2 [11,26,28,29]. Subsequently, piglets were cross-fostered on day 3 to obtain an experimental litter size of 13-14 piglets per sow and ensure every litter had access to viable teats [11].…”
