RESUMO: taxa de evacuação gástrica é uma variável importante para estimar o consumo diário de alimento e portanto a pressão de predação que um piscívoro exerce sobre as presas. Esta taxa pode ser influenciada pela temperatura, tamanho do predador e pelo tipo de alimento.Neste trabalho medimos experimentalmente os efeitos que estas três variáveis exercem sobre a evacuação gástrica de Pygocentrus nattererí, um dos principais piscívoros da Amazônia.Para isso foram utilizadas temperaturas variando de 27° a 31°C e os seguintes itens alimentares: músculo e nadadeira de Semaprochílodus ínsígnís e gafanhoto da espécie Paulínía sp. Estes alimentos compõem a dieta silvestre da piranha. O tamanho da piranha não influenciou na evacuação gástrica. Músculos obtiveram uma taxa de evacuação gástrica de 18,3% h -1, enquanto que nadadeira e gafanhoto obtiveram uma taxa média de 10,7% h -1. O efeito da temperatura foi mais pronunciado quando o item alimentar era músculo do que com nadadeira e insetos. INFLUENCE OF FOOD TYPE AND TEMPERATURE ON GASTRIC EVACUATION OF Pygocentrus nattererí AND EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONSABSTRACT : The gastric evacuation rate is an important variable to measure the daily ration and feeding rhythm therefore, the predation pressure of a piscivorous fish. The evacuation can be influenced by temperature, predator size and food type. In this paper it is presented experimental data of the effect of three food types in Pygocentrus nattererí, a main piscivo¬ rous amazonian fish. The temperature ranged from 27 to 31°C and three food items were used (fish muscle, fish fin rays and insect). These food items are ordinarily consumed by the piranha. Predator size had no effect on gastric evacuation. Fish muscles were evacuated at rate of 18.3% h -1, while fish fin and insect average ratio 10.7% h -1. RESUMO -Avaliar a dieta, o ritmo alimentar e a taxa de consumo diária de alimento dos peixes pode permitir estimar a relação entre a alimentação e o crescimento, a pressão de predação sobre espécies de presas, a limitação alimentar durante estações do ano e a competição intra e interespecífica. Estas informações são desconhecidas para C.monoculus na Amazônia Central e aqui são apresentados dados sobre a ecologia trófica desta espécie durante quatro estações hidrológicas. A área de estudo incluía três lagos de várzea na Amazônia Central, durante os períodos de agosto de 1997 a julho de 1998. Os estudos da dieta e do ritmo alimentar foram feitos através das análises dos conteúdos estomacais. A taxa de evacuação gástrica foi estimada experimentalmente. O consumo diário de alimento foi calculado a partir dos modelos de Elliot & Persson e de Eggers. A intensidade de alimentação da espécie foi baixa durante a seca. A dieta do C. monoculus foi basicamente piscívora e composta de nove famílias de peixes e uma de camarão, apresentando variações no decorrer das estações hidrológicas e com o tamanho do peixe. A taxa de evacuação gástrica foi 16,9% h -1 . O consumo diário de alimento, que não foi diferente nas quatro estações hidrológicas, teve média igual a 2,23% do peso corporal. Este valor é baixo comparado a outros estudos estimados para peixes tropicais. Indicando que esta espécie come relativamente pouco.Palavras-chave: Cichla, Amazônia, peixes, alimentação, consumo diário Feeding and Daily Ration of Cichla monoculus in Central Amazon.ABSTRACT -Information on food, feeding rhythm and daily ration of fish are useful to food limitation. This type of information was lacking to Cichla monoculus in its natural habitats in the Central Amazon floodplain and here it is presented data on the feeding ecology of this species during one hydrological cycle. The study included three floodplain lakes sampled analysis and the gastric evacuation rate was measured experimentally. The daily ration was the dry season. The diet consisted basically of fish, comprising 9 families of fish but one family of shrimp occurred in 20% of the samples. The gastric evacuation rate was 16.9%h -1 . The daily ration was not different between seasons and averaged 2.23% bw. This is a relatively low value compared to other piscivores.

In Japan, the numbers of common cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo hanedae) feeding in inland waters have shown a rapid increase since the 1980s, which has resulted in concerns of predation impacts on inland fisheries. We had an opportunity to examine stomach contents of cormorants in an inland area during winter, [2007][2008]. Of the 23 cormorants examined, 19 had fish in their stomachs. The mean wet weight of identifiable prey fish in stomachs (129.3 g) amounted to 25.7 % of the daily food requirement of the cormorants.
