Energetic properties of acoustic fields

Abstract: From the energy density and the intensity vector of a general acoustic field in the linear adiabatic approximation, the corresponding time-averaged quantities, the active and reactive intensities, are derived and the inherent ambiguities and some of their properties are discussed. The concepts of pressure-velocity phase relation and of velocity of acoustic energy transport are also introduced for a general acoustic field. It is shown that this velocity in modulus cannot exceed the speed of sound, it vanishes o… Show more

“…A series of articles later introduce an alternative definition for instantaneous intensity in a general nonmonochromatic sound field [8][9][10] . In particular, Stanzial and Prodi 10 called these new parameters the radiating and oscillating intensities, which provide an alternative to the more usual active and reactive instantaneous intensity terminology.…”

“…represents the reactive intensity, i.e., the locally oscillating, non-propagating part of the sound field [21], [29], [32]. In [33], this imaginary part is related to the level of phasiness [3], a subjective defect of multi-loudspeaker reproduction methods which is associated with listening discomfort and image instability in case of head movements [34].…”

“…A new theoretical approach to the energetic analysis of general sound "elds has been developed and validated in recent years [1]. Following this approach, which rigorously accounts for the wave nature of the sound "eld, a physically meaningful bipartition of the instantaneous sound intensity has been introduced [2] and the two de"ned quantities have been interpreted as the radiating and oscillating components of the sound intensity [3].…”
