Energetic Electrons Associated with Magnetic Reconnection in the Magnetic Cloud Boundary Layer

Abstract: Here is reported in situ observation of energetic electrons (∼100-500 keV) associated with magnetic reconnection in the solar wind by the ACE and Wind spacecraft. The properties of this magnetic cloud driving reconnection and the associated energetic electron acceleration problem are discussed. Further analyses indicate that the electric field acceleration and Fermi-type mechanism are two fundamental elements in the electron acceleration processes and the trapping effect of the specific magnetic field configur… Show more

“…With availability of higher time resolution datasets, larger numbers of candidate reconnection events have been identified [92]. There has been some controversy as to whether suprathermal particles are associated with some of these events [93,94]. At the same time, if we accept that a turbulence cascade is active in the interplanetary medium, then it seems inescapable that magnetic reconnection in some form must be ongoing.…”

“…However, few observations have confirmed the presence of energetic electrons in the reconnection exhaust of the magnetic cloud boundary layer [17]. In this paper, we report the first observation of energetic electrons within the exhaust in the sheath region of the ICME.…”

“…In fact, a region of energetic electron enhancement was also observed at only one pair of separatrices in the magnetic cloud boundary layer [17]. In addition, a kinetic simulation was conducted and a combined model (i.e.…”
