Endovascular Stent Graft Treatment of Acute Thoracic Aortic Transections Due to Blunt Force Trauma

Abstract: Endovascular stent graft treatment of acute thoracic aortic transections is an encouraging minimally invasive alternative to open surgical repair. Between 2006 and 2008, 16 patients with acute thoracic aortic transections underwent evaluation at our institution. Seven patients who were treated with an endovascular stent graft were reviewed. The mean Glasgow Coma Score was 13.0, probability of survival was .89, and median injury severity score was 32. The mean number of intensive care unit days was 7.7, mean nu… Show more

“…However, following the advances of utilizing stent graft repair of abdominal and thoracic aneurysm disease, practitioners have expanded the indication to utilize a stent graft for traumatic aortic injury. [15][16][17][18] Retrospective experiences have shown successful use of TEVAR in emergency conditions. 14,15,17 In this retrospective analysis of a national data set, the overall hospital mortality after surgical intervention was 10.8%.…”

“…[15][16][17][18] Retrospective experiences have shown successful use of TEVAR in emergency conditions. 14,15,17 In this retrospective analysis of a national data set, the overall hospital mortality after surgical intervention was 10.8%. Significant differences were found when comparing the two modalities, and the use of TEVAR was found to have a lower mortality rate in this study.…”
