“…A substance causing inhibition of high K þ -induced contractions is considered as a blocker of calcium influx (Gilani et al, 2008;Borgi and Chouchane, 2009;Chiwororo et al, 2009;Dubraska et al, 2010). Therefore, our results (the inhibitory effect exhibited by PMAE against high K þ contractions) suggest that PMAE might inhibit the Ca 2 þ influx through voltage-operated Ca 2 þ channels (Xia et al, 2008;Borgi and Chouchane, 2009;Chiwororo and Ojewole, 2009;Dubraska et al, 2010) to produce non-selective spasmolytic effects. The spasmolytic effect may be attributed to the presence of some biochemical substances such as flavonoids which are reported to relax smooth muscles through inhibition of the entry of extracellular Ca 2 þ (Xia et al, 2008;Chen et al, 2009;Dubravka et al, 2010).…”

“…In smooth muscle cells, it is well known that Ca 2 þ is a critical factor in excitation-contraction coupling (Xia et al, 2008;Borrelli et al, 2009). A reduction in intracellular calcium leads to relaxation of intestinal smooth muscle.…”

“…According to Xia et al, (2008) ethyl acetate extract from leaves of Morus Alba showed vasoactive effect on studies in isolated ratthoracic ring. Mulberry juice showed anti-stress activity against mice, which inhibited the elevation of plasmalipid peroxide levels induced by stress (Sakagami et al, 2006).…”

“…Many synthetic drugs are used to treat hypertension, but they have various adverse effects. Recently, the use of natural herbs has steadily grown because of their low toxicity and well-established therapy strategy [4] . Many of the plants used in traditional medicine have been investigated for treating cardiovascular disease [5] .…”
