Endothelial nitric oxide synthase: molecular cloning and characterization of a distinct constitutive enzyme isoform.

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous intercellular messenger molecule synthesized from the amino acid L-arginine by NO synthases in diverse cells and tissues. NO is synthesized in vascular endothelial cells and appears to play an important role in the control of blood pressure and platelet aggregation. A detailed understanding of the regulation of NO synthesis by endothelial cells has been hampered by the lack of molecular clones for endothelial NO synthase; the isolation and characterization ofsuch clones is rep… Show more

“…4 Endothelial cells within the penis produce nitric oxide (NO) with the synthases, i.e., the neuronal, endothelial and inducible types. [5][6][7] The endothelium is recognized as a highly active metabolic and endocrine organ involved in control of the systemic vasculature.…”

“…One inducible isoform and 2 constitutive isoforms of NOS have been cloned (27,(35)(36)(37). Northern blot analyses using a complementary DNA probe for brain NOS have unexpectedly revealed a high expression of this enzyme in skeletal muscle (38).…”

“…Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical that is synthesized by three isoforms of NOS: neuronal NOS (nNOS), inducible NOS (iNOS) and endothelial NOS (eNOS) (Bredt et al 1991;Lamas et al 1992;Nishida et al 1992). NO produces a variety of biological actions under physiological and pathological conditions (Harrison 1997;Brown and Bal-Price 2003;Tieu et al 2003).…”
