Endothelial function as a marker of pre-clinical atherosclerosis: assessment techniques and clinical implications

Abstract: Endothelium plays a key role in maintenance of vascular homeostasis. Cardiovascular risk factors promote development of endothelial dysfunction, characterized by increased vasoconstriction and by procoagulant/pro-inflammatory endothelial activities. In coronary artery, endothelium-dependent dilation improves blood flow, while the occurrence of endothelial dysfunction reduces myocardial perfusion, so new methods have been developed for assessment of endothelial function in coronary and peripheral arteries. The … Show more

“…Therefore, AS may be prevented or treated by understanding hemorheological changes. Studies have demonstrated that blood fat and raises blood viscosity are closely related to AS (Ruggiero et al, 2013) Our results showed that XMJ effectively treated AS by reducing blood fat and viscosity.…”

“…A considerable number of studies have demonstrated that HG levels lead to endothelial cell dysfunction (Haffner, 2006;Funk et al, 2012), which is thought to be the first step in atherosclerotic plaque formation (Ruggiero et al, 2013;Bruno et al, 2014;Chistiakov et al, 2015), a process involving a series of molecular mechanisms, including activation of oxidative stress, PKC signaling, and ER stress (Mah and Bruno, 2012;Kemeny et al, 2013;Safi et al, 2015). In terms of biological characteristics, HUVECs are similar to artery endothelial cells, and have been widely used as a model to study endothelial cell function (Park et al, 2006).…”
