Abstract:The compressed gas breath during diving augments partial pressure of oxygen causing the oxygen concentration of the blood to increase above normal (hyperoxia). Hyperoxia in combination with gas bubbles that develop during the decompression (ascent) phase, likely causing oxidative stress, including transient endothelial dysfunction in venous and arterial vessels. The number of aging divers is rising and aging itself is associated with a gradual impairment of endothelial function. These alterations play a centra… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
