Endothelial Cell Glycocalyx Modulates Immobilization of Leukocytes at the Endothelial Surface

Abstract: Objective-A thick endothelial glycocalyx provides the endothelial surface with a nonadherent shield. Oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL) degrades the endothelial glycocalyx. We hypothesized that glycocalyx degradation stimulates leukocyteendothelial cell adhesion, whereas intravascular supplementation with sulfated polysaccharides reconstitutes the endothelial glycocalyx and attenuates Ox-LDL-induced leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion. Methods and Results-Degradation of the endothelial glycocalyx by local microinjection of… Show more

“…In experimental models, natriuretic peptides augment the level of endothelium glycocalyx biomarkers (including syndecan-1) and increase endothelium permeability. 31 Although degradation of the mouse endothelial glycocalyx increases the number of leukocytes adhered to the vessel walls, 32 we did not find any correlation between syndecan-1 and other biomarkers of endothelial activation and function (eg, ICAM-1 and NOx).…”

“…In these patients, the overestimation of flow reserve with adenosine may thus be diminished. The glycocalyx is vulnerable to atherogenic conditions (32), and its degradation results in an impaired NO production in response to shear stress (16) as well as increases in vascular permeability (28) and adhesiveness (2,32). Changes in glycocalyx integrity thus influence microvascular resistance by affecting perfused capillary volume as well as endothelial function.…”

“…Surgical stress or stress from tissue hypoxia as a result of a reduction in DO 2 due to a hemorrhagic shock leads to the liberation of inflammatory mediators [14][15][16] , which provokes a reduction in endothelial glycocalyx and leads to an increase in platelet aggregation 17 , leukocyte adhesion to the endothelial surface 18 and endothelial permeability, causing tissue edema [19][20] .…”
